olemissreb Posted June 12, 2013 #1 Share Posted June 12, 2013 Yep - my youngest fractured his foot 9 days ago and we leave in 8 days! He was in an orthopedic boot, but the orthopedist put him in a cast today since the xray didn't look like there was much improvement. So he won't be able to go Glacier Trekking or ziplining and I'll be checking on rafting. I did get him a waterproof cover that will go over the cast completely that with the Gortex suit and booties should keep it dry. Got to double check with the rafting company. Stay tuned...I'll let y'all know how it is to do 2 weeks in Alaska with a 13yo sporting a cast & crutches! :)
ellbelle Posted June 12, 2013 #2 Share Posted June 12, 2013 What a bummer!!!! BTW, the cast looks great with the sneaker!
olemissreb Posted June 12, 2013 Author #3 Share Posted June 12, 2013 What a bummer!!!! BTW, the cast looks great with the sneaker! Thanks ellbelle! I'll let him know! The sneaker is actually one of his "turf shoes" that he uses for school baseball. He's not supposed to be wearing it, but since it's so stylish with the cast, I guess I'll let him slide!;)
sherryf Posted June 12, 2013 #4 Share Posted June 12, 2013 It will certainly be a memorable trip! My oldest son broke his hand about 6 weeks before a class trip to Japan. When he got the cast on, the date he was supposed to get it off was 2 days AFTER he was supposed to leave. I got them to push it up to 2 days BEFORE he left, as long as the x-rays looked good. Luckily he was able to get it off before the trip, since it was very hot and humid there and he'd have been miserable with the cast. I made him swear that he'd be careful with it, since it was the 2nd time it had been broken and another break could mean surgery and pins. I hope your son is able to do at least some of the things you had planned. Maybe it will get him extra attention from the girls in the teen club.
TomAmes Posted June 12, 2013 #5 Share Posted June 12, 2013 Poor kid. Maybe there will be some cute girls his age on-board who will give him some special attention! In any event, I'm sure he'll still have a great time. Hotty toddy! (Class of '70)

am-mc Posted June 12, 2013 #7 Share Posted June 12, 2013 Just think - sympathy can get you lots of stuff - like assistance with bags or wheel chair escorts in airports, etc. - using it to your advantage when you have a valid excuse - isnt a bad thing. Rare Keith1010 Posted June 12, 2013 #8 Share Posted June 12, 2013 The good news is that this didn't happen a day before the cruise. I am sure you will all have a great time. Keith

We're behind the band under a white tent with Col. Reb painted on it and a wooden Col. attached to one of the tent legs. Would love to meet you! He's a chick magnet even without the cast! He broke it at swim camp and the girls all wanted to take care of him! I'm sure he'll be eating up all the attention! SherryF - this is the same child who on our last cruise got so frustrated with the kids in the kids club not following the rules that he punched a pole! (Yep you read that right!). We wrapped his hand in an ace bandage and put it in a brace when we got home. Found out he had a boxer's fracture! I told him no more cruises for him after this one! :D Northern: Isn't it though? And this was one of those freak things. He was at swim camp and they were doing dry land exercises, specifically "burpees" or "UpDowns", and he landed wrong. Oh I'm planning on taking advantage of the wheelchair escort in the airports at the very least. Also looking into possibly renting a chair on the Millennium and maybe at Mendenhall glacier if possible. Other than that, we should be pretty much good to go! The good news is that this didn't happen a day before the cruise. I am sure you will all have a great time. Keith Keith - I know! I've been holding my breath and praying that nothing bad would happen for the last month and then this happens! I'm just glad it wasn't worse. If it had happened a day before the cruise, we'd already be in Alaska and finding a way to get it set or in an ortho boot or something!

I told him no more cruises for him after this one! :D Hey! That's how my son broke his hand... the first time. Got frustrated and hit a wall at school. Boxer's fracture. The second time was also at school, getting jostled by the crowd between classes and falling on concrete steps. It probably wouldn't have broken if it hadn't been previously broken about a year before. Now he is ultra careful with it. Whenever he gets mad and feels like hitting someone or something, he just reminds himself that he does not want surgery, pins, and another cast for who-knows how long! I get up there every once in a while but not often for ball games, but now that things are looking up, who knows? But if I do, I'll definitely look y'all up. I guess I was spoiled by being there during the Archie reign and going to their games as a kid. It sounds as if your son may have the cruise of his life! Enjoy your trip! We're taking our first cruise (and to Alaska) next month. I hope our 14 y/o son doesn't get any creative ideas about ways to meet girls on the ship! We have season tix, but usually only make it to 3 games a season in Oxford. This year we'll also be going to Austin for the Texas game and Auburn. Unfortunately, DH and I were there during Steve Sloan (UGH) and the start of Billy Brewer - oh that Independence Bowl his first year(1983) STILL gives me a headache just thinking about it! :D:o Hopefully your 14yo won't be doing any sports prior to your cruise. To make matters worse (or maybe better?), DS gets braces tomorrow! :D He's really going to have the girls eating out of his hand! I guess I'll have to keep him in sight the whole cruise!:D
sue402001 Posted June 13, 2013 #14 Share Posted June 13, 2013 Seeing a picture of your son in a cast reminds me of what mine looked like 4 weeks ago. The only difference was mine was blue and on the other foot. I'm sure he'll have a fun time despite the cast.
