Galveston sailing

Hi all! What would be the best transportation choice from Hobby or a hotel near Hobby to Galveston for a group of 8? We are sailing Navigator 2-23-14 and flying in the day before the cruise! Soooo excited!!!

I would check the Gulf Coast Departures board:

We used a company called Executive Transportation for 9 people once, and they used a 14 passenger van. The cost was $150 each way.

Hey Gina-how's it going? Long time no talk. Do you have any cruises coming up?

Oops-just saw in your signature you're doing the Navigator in Feb. Usually that's when we cruise but thought we would try May this time.

Hi Deb!! What made you decide to cruise in May? Wish you were cruising with us -- always looked forward to your Sunday countdowns! :-) We always stick with February because it's the only month where there's the briefest of times with no marching band commitments. And Tyler Dean graduates in May, so this is his graduation cruise.

Can't wait to see the upgrades on Navigator!

Thanks Gina. We decided to try May since in February we could have a cool day or two but I' m already missing our traditional cruise time. We've done Feb the last 4 years so May is seeming like an eternity!

Wow Tyler Dean is a senior! Time sure flies. Please tell him congrats when he's done in May.

I hope to cruise with you two again-happy cruising!

Deb

I haven't read all the replies so I hope I'm not duplicating.

I would suggest you fly into Hobby. It's much closer than Bush. From Hobby you're probably about 45 minutes away from Galveston. From Bush you would be about two hours (depending on traffic).

I agree with the posters who advise using SW Airlines from Seattle to Houston Hobby. It's one of SW's major hubs and MUCH closer to Galveston. I was recently vacationing in the Pacific NW, so I can tell you there are great food options in Texas that you just don't find up there, including some listed above. I would also advise coming down at least a couple days early and visiting the Houston/Galveston area before the cruise. A lot to see, do, and eat, but very spread out in various places - not concentrated downtown like in Seattle.

Maybe on a future visit you can make it to San Antonio, Austin, and the Texas Hill Country. It's a whole other state than Houston/Galveston area and lots to see and do around here too. Best in early April during wildflower season with very mild temperatures.

Need a good restaurant for a group that some love seafood & others will not eat it. Need combo seafood, beef, chicken and is reasonably priced for dinner.

Joe's Crab Shack?

Try Willie G's. Good selection of food, excellent steaks and a great atmosphere. While some on this thread condemn it as a franchise, they do recommend Joes Crab Shack, what could be more franchised than that? We also ate at Joe's, good food, very comparable to the outlets in California, lacks atmosphere.

Another place we enjoyed was Fisherman's Wharf. Excellent seafood, but I don't know about other choices, we were only interested in the seafood. We also found a great little Mexican restaurant. Couldn't tell you it's name or where it was, but the breakfasts were great, really good menudo.

Casey's next to Gaido's at about 3800 Seawall. Great burgers and onion rings besides seafood. Reasonably priced and family owned, not a chain like Joe's and Fisherman's. Gaido's is also great, but pricey. Same family owns both and have been in business around 60 years.

How is the parking at Gaido's and Caseys? We've been to Galveston several times for cruises, but haven't eaten at them. Usually arrive in Galveston on embarkation day, and try to save a few bucks by eating onboard. Last cruise, our friend fog returned, and we couldn't even park in EZ Cruise parking until the late ships disembarked. We ended up at Subway. We ate at Gaido's on a high school trip, and back in 1975, it was already $8.50 back when most dinners were $2.95 to $3.50. My inlaws took us there once. But for some reason, we never went to Gaido's w/ my parents. Probably because they always took us to Freeport when we went to the beach.

I'm not sure about parking - it seems like any other restaurant parking to me but that's just a drive-by observation.

Here's the menu with prices for Nick's:

For your information

about the chain and franchised comments.

Landry's has 3 Divisions(see website)

Signature Group Restaurants

Hotels, Resorts & Casinos

Entertainment Destinations

In Galveston alone Landry's owns:

Restaurants

Willie G's

Fisherman's Wharf

Rainforest Cafe

Landry's

Fish Tales

Bubba Gump's

The SteakHouse

Salt Grass

Grotto

International House of Pancakes

Jetties

Hotels

San Luis Resort

Holiday Inn Resort

Hilton Resort

Pleasure Pier over the Gulf

And Landry's operates one of two

Galveston's first class convention centers!

Landry's incidentally sold the chain

Joe's Crab Shacks a couple a years ago,

in order to help finance buying all its publicly held stock

to revert back to being a privately held company.

There are still two locations in Galveston.

Restaurant parking at first glance in front on seawall will seem limited,

but in addition to front seawall parking

there is on side street to west of Gaidos

a large parking lot for restaurant public parking!

Then there are additional two lots for motel.

And then there is even one more in rear for Pelican Club.
