Southpawlady Posted August 23, 2013 #1 Share Posted August 23, 2013 I have read all recent posts regarding clothing in Churches in Rome. Thanks to recommendations from those I will get my Husband some zip off pants at REI. currently on sale (: My question is about the shoes required. Does he really need to wear dress shoes? Tennis Shoes, mostly white are his typical traveling shoes. He does have a pair of sandals, a little nicer looking than the Teva style. The signs online show no tennis shoes. Do they really follow through with that? I also saw the no flip flop symbol. Are sandals the do not go between your toes acceptable? Heading there in September. Comments and. Suggestions appreciated. Rare cruisemom42 Posted August 23, 2013 #2 Share Posted August 23, 2013 I do not know where you are looking online, but the official sign in front of the Basilica has no reference to type of shoe that can be worn: http://italytravelista.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/DSCN2347.JPG So far as I know, you can wear any type of shoe, including sandals or athletic shoes. Southpawlady Posted August 23, 2013 Author #4 Share Posted August 23, 2013 When typing "Vatican dress code" in my search engine you get different sights to link into. You also get picture images, two of which are on the link you provided. The first images have pictures of tennis shoes and flip flops with x's through them, showing them as unacceptable. If tennis shoes are okay to wear my husband will be pleased to find this out.
euro cruiser Posted August 23, 2013 #5 Share Posted August 23, 2013 If sandals were a problem the entire Franciscan order would be barred. In other words, they are fine. So are sneakers.
Aurora2143 Posted August 23, 2013 #6 Share Posted August 23, 2013 Thank you for this thread. I was wondering the same thing. I was going to have DH wear his tennis shoes and I was going to wear a cute pair of slides.

I believe if you look closely, it says something like "International Medical University" at the bottom. ;)
MeHeartCruising Posted August 23, 2013 #8 Share Posted August 23, 2013 I have always worn shiny white sneakers with docker pants or jeans and have never had any problems in any European church, including St. Peters or the Sistene Chapel.
Rare Hlitner Posted August 23, 2013 #9 Share Posted August 23, 2013 Tennis shoes (Trainers for you Brits) and sandals are no problem inside the Vatican. As to flip flops....I am not sure since they have become more trendy. Hank

euro cruiser Posted August 23, 2013 #11 Share Posted August 23, 2013 There are Franciscan sisters as well as friars, brothers, and priests. I don't know if you can see in this picture, but there are sandals.
