You can take a private driver, train or bus. Bus has wt limit, train does not. Use the following web site and make up your own mind. ;)

BUS -- http://www.nationalexpress.com/home/hp.cfm

TRAIN -- http://www.setrains.co.uk/setrains

We have went by train and private driver (from airport)

On the train we went first class had an compartment all by ourselves and the Bags. There are carts at both to carry your bags from taxi to train/bus -- no red caps.

You can buy train tickets before you go and they have a USA office for questions.

Thank you both, gracecarmp and JORAY, for your help and advice. We are at the point in life were we have a hard time lifting bags on to many European trains. This has become a big problem. On the train that you both are referring to, can one wheel bags on and off? If one can do that this sounds like the ideal way to go to.

I rented a car from Hertz and drive to Dover. Thew drop off is a mere mile or so from the port. I dropped my wife off with the luggage, returned the car and walked back to the ship instead of waiting 15 minutes for a taxi.

Your rental rate depends on what group you belong to (AAA, airline frequent flyer club, etc), but plan on anothe 15 to 20 GBP for gasoline fill up which is conveniently located a few block from the Hertz office.

We took advantage of the chance to see some of the countryside between London and Dover. We hired Denise from http://www.toursoftherealm.com She was fabulous. Picked us up at our hotel in London, and it was about a 6 hr. day with lunch at a great little pub on the way. No expressways, all back roads that were quite lovely.
