Hurricane Dennis

Recommended Posts

my wife and I are supposed to be leaving sunday out of new orleans on the conquest. this will be our first cruise. what's the probability of it being canceled? how far in advance would we know if it was? any info would be much appreciated.
Best guess would be probability of a delayed embarkation and a shortened cruise would be highest, if Dennis is too close to NO for a Sunday debarkation of this week's cruise.

Keep an eye on the CCL website for "official" info, but keep a close eye here for updates. :D I would say you mostly likely won't hear of any changes until late Friday or very early Saturday. But that too is just a guess.

I wish all of you luck with your sailings!!!

We will be on the Conquest the week after some of you folks- July 17th- maybe all the storms will be over by then. I hope there's not another one forming!!

I like to hear from some you sailing on the Conquest!!

We are scheduled to leave on Saturday out of Mobile on the Holiday. We were on the Conquest when it was in Biloxi and headed into TS Bill with 20-25 foot waves making for a very bouncy ride for the first day. It looks to me that no matter where Dennis ends up we are in for another rough ride (especially on a smaller ship) as Dennis enters the GOM if the Holiday acutally sails. What is scary for me is the fact that I live in Mobile and will be leaving a 19 year old home alone possibly during a major hurricane.

Same here, SD.... Sail on the 16th out of N.O. on the Sensation....sigh! Hope TS Dennis has made up his mind by then where he wants to enter the states. Just hope he's not too ferocious. I wonder what the group that is supposed to come in before us is going to do? Wonder where they will dock if they can't in N.O. Will have to keep a look out at the CCL page like another poster said.

Just go over the evacuation plans so that if that becomes necessary your D19 knows what to do.

We are hopefully leaving from Tampa on the 10th (Miracle). It appears that Tampa most likely will be okay, just wondering how the heck the Miracle is going to get from Cozumel to Tampa. They would have to sail straight thru the storm.

Maybe cancel Cozumel and take the long way around behind the storm, just thinking of different scenarios. Don’t want to head to Tampa if the ship is not going to be there.

It looks like it is going to be an interesting season. I am sitting here at work looking at TS Cindy today. I think it may get interesting here on Monday. Hubby and I got 2 extra sea days thanks to Hurricane Francis last year.

Live from the MIRACLE!!!

Beautiful sunny HOT day in Costa Maya... yes.. I too am curious as to how we will return to Tampa... I would ASSUME (they are saying NOTHING on the ship) that we will have to drop a port and return a day early... That would get MY VOTE... I DO NOT want to be ANYWHERE NEAR a CAT 3 storm on the high seas!!!

Time will tell, even if CCL won't ...

Tom-n-Cheryl,

Hope everything works out with the weather. Maybe you will stay out an extra day (life could be worse). We are watching the storm closely too.

Have you checked out the "grapes" in the dining room yet!

Hope Fun-21 has been kind thus far.

thanks for the update

here is the update on CC news board

Updated: 1:17 p.m.) -- Right on the heels of Tropical Storm Cindy, which made landfall (but caused minimal damage) in Louisiana last night, Tropical Storm Dennis is making good time over the Caribbean Sea and is expected to near Jamaica early tomorrow -- and could possibly reach hurricane status later today. According to Reuters, this is the first time in recorded history that four named tropical systems have formed in the Atlantic by July 5; in 2004, for example, Hurricane Danielle didn't pop up until mid-August.

A hurricane watch has been issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for the Cayman Islands and central and eastern Cuba. Haiti and Jamaica are under a hurricane warning, and a tropical storm warning is in effect for the south coast of the Dominican Republic. The storm could graze south Florida as a hurricane as early as Friday. Maximum sustained winds are currently clocked at 65 miles per hour.

At this point, none of the cruise lines we've contacted have altered Western Caribbean itineraries, but are monitoring Dennis' progress. A spokeswoman for Princess tells us that they "are in regular communication with Caribbean Princess but no itinerary changes have been made yet. Caribbean Princess is safely docked in Grand Cayman today." Check back with Cruise Critic's news for any changes in cruise-related travel.

Safe travels for everyone this week/end.........

If the ship has to stay out an extra or so because of weather, what happens to the cruise the following week? Are they shortened a day because of the late return?

Unfortunately yes. The following cruise is shortened so that the cruiseline can get back on their regular schedule with the cruise following the shortened one.

They will shorten and lengthen cruises as necessary during hurricane season, last year, they did shorten cruises, while giving credits, etc. due to the ones that were lengthened. Always a risk of a "change of plans" during hurricane season... best to just roll with the punches and know they are doing everything necessary for the safety of pax and crew.

Peg, you are going to love this ship! It is the most beautiful ship in the fleet! We just got off her 2 weeks ago and still talking about it!

Have a great time, and don't worry about the weather! Please do me a favor... Go to the Casino and look for Eva the casino host and tell her "Dave and Joanne said hello" She is the greatest!

We are on this one too. Look for us. We will be the family with the Dramamine and barf bags.;)

We have friends on the Rhapsody this week, and they missed going to Grand Cayman today because of Dennis. At least they missed the storm. They had a little rough sailing Monday night. However, they are happy to be on the ship:)

I heard that the Victory is going to scrap Cozumel, Grand Cayman and Ocho Rios and just have sea days and stops in Nassau and Freeport. I certainly understand the reasons for this and I would never want the cruiselines to put anyone in danger, but it wouldn't be human nature not to be extremely disappointed. I know I'd be banging my head on the nearest bulkhead. C'mon now...you're planning on three great ports and you get Nassau and Freeport? The armpits of the Caribbean? My cruise isn't until later this month, thank goodness, but I'll be chewing my fingernails every time a new tropical depression forms. No week is guaranteed to be free of hurricanes this year! I'm keeping my (chewed) fingers crossed until then and my prayers are with anyone out on a cruise or going out on a cruise this week.

I would make plans for 19YO to stay with family or friends that you trust. Leave lots of $$ to evacuate if need be. You know I-65 goes to all lanes northbound in the event of an evacuation and I'd go to at least Montgomery or farther north. (If you can find a room at all) And if you ARE able to cruise and Mobile takes a direct hit you'll come back to the terminal under at least 8 feet of water. If you park at the terminal, park on an upper level (but not the very top) or you may be looking for a new car too.

Witout knowing the 19 year old in question it's hard to say for sure, but 19 year olds are pretty much adults in my book. The ones that don't go to college are presumably employed and perhaps living on their own, the same as 29, 39, or 69 year olds. And the ones that do go to college are likely pretty sharp, that's how they got into college in the first place.

Sure, they have less practical life experience than older folks so their decision making might not be as good, and you're going to worry about them because they are your kids, but overall I don't see them as being much more at risk than anyone else in a hurricane.
