not2old Posted October 30, 2013 #1 Share Posted October 30, 2013 (edited) We got off the Grandeur on Oct 25th, it was hands down the best cruise we have had in ages! The crew was wonderful, food was good and we even broke even in the casino:D. The only bad part was having to sleep on our mattress each night! Apparently since the fire the entire bed makeup has gone downhill, Our bed was roughly about 8-9 inches off the floor at most and the mattress was about 6 inches thick. There were no eggcrates available but our room steward put extra pads on but they didn't help. We found it nearly impossible to climb out of this bed every morning. I can't believe some of the other older people didn't have similar issues. The bed had no box springs but a metal frame similar to roll away cots. Sent an email to Mr. Goldstein but haven't received any response. We had friends in a GS who had an actual bed that looked like a bed and felt very comfortable. I know, you get what you pay for, but we were in a JS and expected a little more comfort than what we had. DH and I both visited our doctor after we got home to get some medication for back pain. He went for a massage during the cruise to see if it would help but it didn't. This was the only dark spot on the entire cruise but it is enough to change our thoughts about Grandeur. MS52 Posted October 30, 2013 #3 Share Posted October 30, 2013 Curious as to what your cabin # was. We're on the Grandeur in January.
dixieva Posted October 30, 2013 #4 Share Posted October 30, 2013 Never seen a box spring on a cruise ship bed either. Did you complain to Guest Services while on board? My daughter had a bed in our JS in March of this year on Enchantment and it squeaked every time she turned over. She complained to Guest Services and they worked to get it straight. Ended up with not only a new mattress but a new bed frame too.
ilovenyc72 Posted October 30, 2013 #5 Share Posted October 30, 2013 I'm sorry that you were uncomfortable sleeping. Im going on the Grandeur next week and I already suffer from back problems. I hope I dont have an issue. :( Also, not to go off topic, but can you tell me what movies they played on the ship? I know it might change before next week when I sail but just surious if they are showing first run movies. Thank you! :)
vlynn Posted October 30, 2013 #6 Share Posted October 30, 2013 We will be on the Grandeur in January. Did anyone else who has been on the Grandeur recently have a similar experience. If so what room were you in? Maybe they only changed the beds in the area affected by the fire. The bed on the Enchantment last January was just fine. I really hope they are similar on the Grandeur. not2old Posted October 30, 2013 Author #7 Share Posted October 30, 2013 We were in 7650 on the aft. It was certainly a different sleeping situation than when we were on our May 17th cruise! We were in 7150 and no issues that time. Yes, we did talk to Guest Services but they said nothing could be done.... Asked for a new mattress but was told none available and no eggcrates available either! Typical Guest Services answer as on most ships!
KeywestK Posted October 30, 2013 #8 Share Posted October 30, 2013 I've always loved the bedding on our RCI cruises, but when we were on Grandeur in August, I remember thinking, hummmmm, I'm not loving this bed. Mattress was very thin and very hard. I assumed it was because it was an older ship, and it never even occurred to me to ask for an egg crate:o
irisheileen Posted October 30, 2013 #9 Share Posted October 30, 2013 Glad you had a great cruise! We are sail her in December and I'm hoping that our mattress is good. We always awoke to sore backs and necks prior to getting our current mattress at home. The morning aches suddenly went away! We certainly don't want to ache during our cruise that we are taking "to relax and unwind"! Anybody have mattress info on inside cabins on deck three? cruzinlady1947 Posted October 30, 2013 #11 Share Posted October 30, 2013 (edited) Anybody have mattress info on inside cabins on deck three? I was on with "not2old" and we were on deck 3, inside cabin #3023. Our mattresses were bad too. I didn't suffer, but noticed a big difference from the Enchantment and Explorer. I always loved the bedding, but not on the Grandeur. We are on it in Nov. for Thanksgiving, only on deck 4. I will check that out when I get there. Hopefully it will be better. If not, I will go to guest services and complain. If enough people do complain, maybe they will do something about it. Then again, maybe not. Gwen :) Edited October 30, 2013 by cruzinlady1947

Bookish Angel Posted October 30, 2013 #13 Share Posted October 30, 2013 (edited) My friend and I were on deck 7 (can't remember the cabin #) for a 9 day New England/Canada cruise. Both of our mattresses looked as if they had recently been vacated by elephants - the dips in the mattress were that big. We slept on them the first night thinking "how bad can they be?". Oh, we tossed and turned! We asked our room steward if anything could be done and bless him, he took it as a challenge. There were no other mattresses available but he flipped ours and got us each 3 soft and fluffy comferters and egg crate pads which he configured for maximum comfort given the situation. While not a perfect solution, it made sleeping easier. We felt like "Princess and the Pea - the Menopause Years." retiredgram Posted October 30, 2013 #16 Share Posted October 30, 2013 Cruised on the Grandeur Oct. 11. Cabin #3107. No complaints with the beds. Twins beds were occupied by 69 and 84 year old females.
not2old Posted October 30, 2013 Author #17 Share Posted October 30, 2013 Thanks for all the replies! Gwen, Jerry was totally miserable the whole cruise and I wasn't far behind!! I really hope someone from Mr. Goldstein's office will follow up my complaint with a phone call, I will let ya'll know. This was absolutely the best cruise we have had, loved our nightly "CL Get Togethers" and miss each of you! Let me know after your next cruise how the bedding was. Hope to sail with you and Fred again....

I really love sailing out of Baltimore and love RCIs itinerary. It will be a shame if this turns out to be our first and last on the Grandeur. :( Like I said, I didn't suffer from it, I just noticed it wasn't as comfortable as the others I've had. You might not even mind it. If you do, just ask them to do something about it. I didn't say anything, because it didn't bother me that much. I didn't lose any sleep over it. I had other issues that caused my discomfort while sleeping. The mattress, I could live with. But, I will say something if it is the same next month when I cruise. At least they will know that people aren't happy with it. Have a great cruise. You might just be too tired from having fun all day to even notice the mattress.......:p Gwen :)

Sorry you had so much trouble with the mattress. I felt the difference too, but really think it was my ankle that was the problem with my discomfort. But, I will be sure to mention something if the mattress is bad next month. I will keep you informed. Gwen :)

I will check the mattress right away and ask for an egg crate or something right away if it seems uncomfortable. I'm really not that picky so I will just go with a positive attitude. Plus with people complaining maybe it will be better by January. Lol. Thanks for the reassurance! :-)

maureencruiser Posted October 31, 2013 #23 Share Posted October 31, 2013 Thanks for the info, I'm sailing in December and NOBODY is posting anything about the Grandeur. I'm planning on doing a live review, so, that should be fun and I like to post plenty of pics so I can pay it forward for all the info I have gotten over the years. What itinerary were you on? Did you notice what kinds of parties/ events they had at night. I know the Quest, Love and Marriage, but, what else did they do? Battle of the Sexes? Glow Party? Majority Rules?
