Self Guided Tour of Antigua

We have just come back from our cruise with Celebrity and thought I would share our experience of this tour.

On the tourbus, we were given a map and were advised that there would be tour guides at the drop off point. The drop off point was at a jade factory which was very busy as several buses had dropped there.

We walked along the main street to the Central Plaza and found a 'Hop on Hop Off' Bus there. The tour was set to start at 10am and there were just the 2 of us plus 2 Spanish speakers on board.

The tour took us all around Antigua and the driver/guide was very knowledgeable and showed us all the highlights. In fact, we saw a lot more than if we had been walking. We stopped a number of times when we got off and had a look around.

We also went to the Cross above the city which gave us a fantastic view with plenty of time for photos.

We also had approx. 15 minutes at a coffee plantation.

Excellent tour lasted about 2 1/4 hours.

Glad you posted this. We also enjoyed taking the Self Guided tour of Antigua.

We didn't take the extra you mentioned which does sound nice ... but did enjoy just walking around and going to places on our own because we like going to ordinary things like grocery stores and bars where locals are. :)

Can you say what this "hop on hop off" tour cost for you?

IIRC it was US$10 pp.

Here is a link to my photos. You will see the tour bus, some of the sights and the view from the cross. https://picasaweb.google.com/111698417210755064807/PuertoQuetzalGuatemala?authuser=0&feat=directlink

Having been mugged on a trip to Buenos Aires last February , we are very cautious/nervous when we are out and about now.

We felt safe enough. The tour guide did say that the place up by the cross was not too safe at night. I think he well knew the places not to stop although I have to say there didn't seem to be any areas that looked dodgy.

It is a fascinating place - very ancient and a lot of disrepair.

Everyone we spoke to on board ship did the Antigua Self Guided tour and hired a guide when they got there for $10.

Our friends did the trip that climbs one of the volcanoes. Might try that next time.

The area is highly dependent on tourism so mos people do there part o keep it safe. We were there in November and did a walk around with a tour guide and did not have any concerns.

There are a lot of street sellers. Anything from pipes to necklaces to linen.

They can be persistent but they are never scary. A couple of polite 'No thank yous' and they move one.
