Rare LMaxwell Posted January 13, 2014 #1 Share Posted January 13, 2014 Pretty much in the title; why are Oasis and Allure blue in color and the rest of the fleet is still bright white? What is the significance, if any, of the difference? And why not paint the ships that go into drydock in a similar fashion for more commonality amongst the fleet? The lower part of the hull is a very pale blue.
dmwnc1959 Posted January 13, 2014 #6 Share Posted January 13, 2014 (edited) Here's a couple of pictures I took of Allure of the Seas when I cruised her. You can easily see the blue hull when compared to Mariner of the Seas... Edited January 13, 2014 by dmwnc1959
setsail Posted January 13, 2014 #7 Share Posted January 13, 2014 From AG'S blog Why are the hulls of Allure and Oasis of the Seas light blue instead of white? -Dale M. Dale, glad you enjoyed your recent cruise on Allure of the Seas. The hulls of Oasis and Allure are painted a very light blue. Please note that I am not in favor of gender stereotyping and do not always support blue for boys and pink for girls. On the other hand, I am a traditionalist and the ship will always be a “she.” We think the light blue looks terrific on her. There was a lot of internal debate about moving away from the traditional white hull. Ultimately we decided that the Oasis-class ships are so unique that we wanted a somewhat different hull color. The difference is most visible when the sun is shining directly on the hull (never a bad thing!). At other times you have to look pretty closely to notice much of a difference from the rest of the fleet.

trev71 Posted January 13, 2014 #9 Share Posted January 13, 2014 I heard this before and my sources told me that, it was easier to keep clean looking as white gets dirty really fast

wolfcathorse Posted January 13, 2014 #11 Share Posted January 13, 2014 I thought I read when Oasis was being built that Fain said that the hull paint they chose would be more aerodynamic (hydrodynamic). For example, the water would slip over the surface faster thus allowing for an increased percentage of fuel savings. And that paint allowing this only came in pale blue. I'm old and I could have just dreamed I read something like that.
Cindy Posted January 13, 2014 #12 Share Posted January 13, 2014 Wow! I saw Allure "up close and personal" in Cozumel a couple years ago and took tons of pictures. I never noticed that the bottom of the hull was blue! When I looked at some of my pictures, sure enough...definitely blue! I need to pay more attention!:o

Cindy Posted January 13, 2014 #17 Share Posted January 13, 2014 It's VERY subtle. I see the blue clearly now that I know it's there, but I'm amazed that I've looked at my pictures many times and never noticed! Here's Oasis in St. Thomas... Aquahound Posted January 13, 2014 #19 Share Posted January 13, 2014 Hull color plays a role in energy conservation. Light colored hulls are best for hot weather and dark colored hulls are best for cold weather. I would imagine the pale blue deflects sunlight and glare from the water, probably a little better than white.
CarpeCerevisi Posted January 13, 2014 #20 Share Posted January 13, 2014 Earl Scheib had a special on light blue paint. (I'll paint any ship for $8900.95.):)
