Salacia Posted April 4, 2014 #26 Share Posted April 4, 2014 I was unable to find the threads regarding Veendam's last few cruises from NY to Bermuda in 2012, which makes for interesting reading, if you can find those threads. I remember them well because we took two r/t NY - Bermuda cruises on the Veendam that year. -S.
Salacia Posted April 4, 2014 #27 Share Posted April 4, 2014 (edited) Copied from http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/english/country/bermuda.html Public Health Concern - Contaminated Beaches: Ongoing dumping of raw sewage off Bermuda’s south coast causes intermittent contamination of the waters along the island’s south shore beaches, creating a public health hazard. Changing weather conditions – wind, swells, tides, and rain – can bring rapid degradation of water quality along the beaches, resulting in human bacteria levels from fecal contamination up to four times the acceptable U.S. standard. In 2013, as many as five of the beaches were described as “unfit for recreational use” on different occasions based on water samples. Bermudian authorities do not provide warnings at those times when waves may be contaminated. Possible negative health effects for swimmers include gastroenteritis, ear infections, respiratory illnesses, and staph infections. In addition, as a general medical matter, persons exposed to sewage-contaminated water face increased risk of Hepatitis A, eye infections, and typhoid. Those who intend to enter the waters along the south shore may wish to consider Hepatitis A and typhoid immunizations prior to doing so. The Government of Bermuda has announced that it plans to take measures to reduce or treat the outfall, but as of March 2014, the dumping continues unabated... FigmentsKiss Posted May 14, 2014 #29 Share Posted May 14, 2014 Does anyone know when docked, which side overlooks Front Street (yes, I realize it could always change, but a majority of the time)?

Alpha84 Posted May 15, 2014 #33 Share Posted May 15, 2014 Does anyone know when docked, which side overlooks Front Street (yes, I realize it could always change, but a majority of the time)? When we docked in Hamilton, it was in the same direction as HamOp's photo. We had a cabin on the port side and the view across the harbor was very nice. I heard that the cabins on the Front Street side can get a lot of noise from the night clubs directly across the street late into the night. Perhaps someone who had a cabin on the Front Street side can provide more insight.

So nice to look out over the harbor and watch the water traffic and sail boats. Looking out at the activity on Front Street, while interesting, gets old quickly. brookeinmn Posted August 13, 2014 #36 Share Posted August 13, 2014 I'm seriously considering this cruise for our anniversary trip next summer. Would love to hear any other opinions on the ship and Bermuda.
Rare albingirl Posted August 13, 2014 #37 Share Posted August 13, 2014 we had a port side stateroom on the Veendam several years ago when we went to Bermuda. However, the ship sailed out of Manhatten. I had tears in my eyes when we sailed past the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Never forgot it. It was a wonderful cruise and one of our favorites. It was our third time to Bermuda and we loved it just as much. So Brit and so civil. Oh my!:)
