Kamloops50 Posted March 1, 2014 #2 Share Posted March 1, 2014 Are casinos open in Hawaiian waters? Yes they open them as soon as they are a given distance from port .
elhenry Posted March 1, 2014 #3 Share Posted March 1, 2014 Are casinos open in Hawaiian waters? No. Gambling is illegal in Hawaii and ships in Hawaiian waters cannot operate casinos. The POA, which cruises exclusively in Hawaiian waters, has no casino.
Rare cr8tiv1 Posted March 1, 2014 #4 Share Posted March 1, 2014 There are limited hours while in the islands. Sometimes the captain will decide to go a little off shore (from Kauai) to open the casinos for a few hours. On the November Star Voyage, the captain opened the casino twice for about 4 hours each night as we left Kauai and Maui. There is no Bingo during the four days you are there. Pia1913 Posted March 1, 2014 Author #5 Share Posted March 1, 2014 Having done quite a few Hawaiian cruises (Princess) and never recalling the casino totally shut down, I posted this question for my DIL. They are planning on Pride of America (NCL) and I see now that things are different with this line. Thank you for your responses.
Gunner22aa Posted March 1, 2014 #6 Share Posted March 1, 2014 The casino on board is legally allowed to open once the ship is in international waters which is internationally recognized as 12 miles even though many nations like my own claim jurisdiction out to 200. Ilovesailing Posted March 1, 2014 #7 Share Posted March 1, 2014 Having done this cruise with NCL total of 6 times and can say that while it looks expensive it is because they have to factor in casino lost monies bingo etc. Plus they have a fair amount of Us staff of which are unionized because the ship is US flagged. Having said that I still believe its the biggest bang for your buck and I ask you to compare amt of time you have in each port verses NCL. PS: chances are your gonna lose your money in the casino any way so just pay it up front.
momofmatt Posted April 13, 2014 #8 Share Posted April 13, 2014 There are conflicting answers here. I am planning on going on the Pride of America in July of 2015. I searched the ship and didn't see a casino. Can someone tell me if there is one on this ship? and if there is will it be open in Hawaii.

AmberCascades Posted April 13, 2014 #11 Share Posted April 13, 2014 There is no casino on the POA. It doesn't leave Hawaiian waters so there would be no point. We enjoyed our trip around the islands though and we felt it was a good deal since we didn't have to spend a bunch of vacation days just getting to and from Hawaii. Almost every Hawaiian guide that we had talked about how they tend to take their vacations in Las Vegas. I'm guessing it's not too long of a flight from Hawaii and then they can gamble as much as they want.

The late Sen. Inouye made it his goals in life to prohibit gambling in Hawaii. As others have said, since the POA does not leave Hawaiian waters, there is no casino onboard. When the Aloha was reflagged back to the Sky, the casino we removed when going to Hawaii was rebuilt after 4 years.
momofmatt Posted June 20, 2014 #14 Share Posted June 20, 2014 Thank you for all your responses. I wish other ships went to Hawaii during the summer months. DH is a teacher and I work in the school system so we can only cruise over summer and Christmas break. spunks Posted June 29, 2014 #15 Share Posted June 29, 2014 The casinos are closed for the entire time you are in Hawaii on Princess ships. The dealers like having 4-5 days off after going through 8-10 straight sea days of long hours.(4-5 days Hawaii to California and the same back again) Doug
