Killian Posted July 24, 2005 #1 Share Posted July 24, 2005 I have been reading that Box Jellyfish can be a problem in Hawaii 9-10 days after a full moon. We will be at the BI and Maui during this time. How much of a threat is this? Are there certain islands or areas that are worse then others? Suebee Posted July 24, 2005 #2 Share Posted July 24, 2005 It makes the news every month. Here on Oahu, tourists get stung constantly at Waikiki. There is usually a peak day and then it goes down. The lifeguards will tell you when the highest threat is and where to stay away. Our beach has the Pourtugese Man O War all the time and I have never been stung. But the Box jellies are a bigger problem for 1 or 2 days.
Nliedel Posted July 24, 2005 #3 Share Posted July 24, 2005 I was stung by one in Hawaii once, on Waikiki beach. Not horrific, it was bad for a while but I am fine now and not afraid. So even if the worst happens, and out of literally hundreds of people on the beach that day I was, to my knowldedge, the only one stung, you will be fine. spleen93 Posted July 24, 2005 #4 Share Posted July 24, 2005 What Suebee said. They'll usually close beaches down if the infestation gets bad. There's always the pool ... :) Spleen
