Mockette Posted March 5, 2014 #1 Share Posted March 5, 2014 I feel a little naive asking, but my daughter brought it up and I didn't know...so I ask you wise people : ) When Cruising from Vancouver to Astoria to San Francisco to LA...on the days at sea, are you close enough to see the coast line? It won't make or break the cruise, we are just curious. Thanks : )
mtwingcpa Posted March 5, 2014 #2 Share Posted March 5, 2014 Generally, you will only see the coast when entering or leaving a harbor. At other times the ships operate far enough off shore to: 1) be in international waters 2) open their casinos 3) avoid special fuel quality restrictions in some states 4) etc ...and there will be no view of the shoreline. :-(

Calif., and having made this trip both up and down the coast, I have to say you're likely as not to see very little. Ships stand out to sea by many miles for reasons already mentioned - and frankly there's precious little to see. The coast is rather unattractive, especially from a distance, so the only real throatgrabber will be sailing into San Francisco bay under the Golden Gate bridge. I hope your daughter won't be too disappointed.... Edited March 5, 2014 by Rickey
JJ2sail Posted March 5, 2014 #4 Share Posted March 5, 2014 (edited) No you really don't see the coastline. I've done it twice. I seem to remember coming into Astoria was pretty though. I think there was a lighthouse we sailed past. Edited March 5, 2014 by JJ2sail
Putterdude Posted March 7, 2014 #5 Share Posted March 7, 2014 You will be some 35 to 50 miles off the coast so no, you will see little coastline until you enter the Strait of Juan de Fuca which separates the bottom end of Vancouver Is. From Washington state.

BarbGar Posted March 23, 2014 #8 Share Posted March 23, 2014 We are also interested in this cruise. For those of you who have done it, could you please tell me if it was rough waters? I usually get sea sick for a day or two on a cruise, so I like to try to avoid the rougher waters when I can. Is there a better time of the year to go then others? Perhaps that would help? Thanks Much!
SadieN Posted March 23, 2014 #9 Share Posted March 23, 2014 (edited) Can't predict the weather but that is a nice itin. We really like Astoria. But it is a repositioning cruise, only done at the end of the Alaska season. Southbound is almost always smoother than northbound due to the current running down the coast from Alaska. It is nothing like the constant shaking we had in the Carribbean. We've done this itin three times, twice northbound in April. First time we hit a huge storm off the coast of Oregon. The second time the seas were as smooth as glass. Edited March 23, 2014 by SadieN
