Auckland: What to do with the luggage?

Recommended Posts

Our Celebrity cruise ends in the morning in Auckland. Our flight back to LAX is at 7:00 pm.

If we want to visit Auckland for the day, what do we do with our luggage?

Is there somewhere to check them?

We don't plan to do much. Maybe just go to the Auckland Art Gallery and grab some lunch. Be at the airport around 5:00 to check in.

You can store your luggage at the i-site at Princes Wharf today between 8.30am & 5pm. The rates are $5 per bag for 4 hours & $10 for the day to 5pm. They don’t take bookings for this service.

If this doesn’t suit the Britomart Travel Centre in nearby Queen St has 24 hr storage at $10 per bag for small bags & $15 for a large one up to 80x40x90cms. This is on the train level & there is a lift & escalator.

Both are within eyeshot of the cruise terminal and super easy to access.

How long does it take roughly from the wharf to the airport. We have done it once on the bus which we found very easy, but we can't remember how long it took us.

I remember we took a taxi in from the airport as we didn't know where our apartment would be exactly, and his driving in a fairly old car (it seemed old anyhow, or just well worn) was a bit scary. The bus felt safer. I know the taxi to the casino was very good value compared to walking up that hill!

Wharf to the airport is about 30mins in good traffic and an hour in heavy traffic.

A good compromise between a taxi and a bus (as per Maxx etc) is one of the many shuttle services such as http://www.supershuttle.co.nz/Default.aspx or http://www.airbus.co.nz

What about a ship tour of Auckland finishing at the airport.

Leave your luggage on bus.

This would be my suggestion too, check if they have transfer tours.

We did that in Rome, although pricey it was for us the best solution.

Yes, I did consider the Celebrity post-cruise Auckland city tour with airport drop off. But I read a negative review on this website. They were rushed off the ship at 7:00 am. Got to the first sight too early which was still closed, so they missed that visit. The whole tour was rushed and hectic. And they were dropped off at the airport way too early. At $162/person, we could do better by ourselves. I don't want to experience a crazy hectic tour on my last day.

I figured at about $20 for luggage storage and $16/person on the Airbus was a better deal. We plan to spend some leisurely time at the Auckland Art Gallery, which is for free. :)

Thank you for all your input.

If you do take the airbus make sure that you allow plenty of time for that. Personally I would take either the Shuttle or go by taxi. If you phone Discount Taxi Ph: 529-1000 (say from the Gallery) the fee would be around or under $50NZ. Last time (Sep'13) we went to the airport from where the ship docks the fee was $35.

A ship tour of Auckland would be cool BUT the airport is on the other harbour, so there is no way to go near it by boat, unless you go around the top of New Zealand ... not quite enough time for that option on the day sorry ;)
