I am disturbed enough by the locals' comments at the end of the various news articles :(

 

One choice comment (among many) How about the big pipe just outside Dockyard's "beach"? Makes for amazing snorkelling... you never know what you will see.

How that place can be promoted as a snorkling area is beyond me. The operators should be ashamed of themselves.

That's a man-made beach over what once was a dump! Swim at your own risk....

From the 2 articles I have read in the Gazette, it seems like the bacterial levels go up and down depending on weather (such as rainfall) and currents, so it is variable.

We usually go to Bermuda every summer and swim at Horseshoe and have never had a problem. But I don't like what I am reading, esp the comments by locals.

Thank you, yes I've read those too. The local's comments has me worried as well.

 

You go every year and haven't had a problem? That's good to hear at least. We haven't been in close to 25 years (before my kids were born!).

 

Have you ever heard of a government warning by the US about swimming in the waters in Bermuda? I don't recall hearing any, but who knows?

No, I have heard rumors of waste discharge offshore but never an official warning like that one. It does make me concerned.

We have been there 5 times in the past 6 years, spent 2-3 days in the water each time and never had an issue, going 1st week of June and will not think twice

I've been going there since 1991 and I haven't had a problem either, but this is the first time I've seen an official warning. So I am going to think twice.

 

It doesn't make me feel any better that locals in the comments section talk about 'greaseballs' washing up on shore from the waste that is discharged.

 

They were taking random samplings and getting ecoli levels 4x above safe levels.

I just hope they continue to sample the water and post on the beach if there are any issues.

My favorite vacation beaches are St. martin and Bermuda. This winter St. martin had CDC warnings about mosquitoes and virus. Been going there for 20 years. Had to give it up. Now Bermuda is in trouble. Rethinking where to go on vacation.

There are not too many paradises. Something is going to be negative almost anywhere. The ocean is pretty much a sewage dump so what you are saying is give up going to the beach. You won't find many sewage treatment plants on so called Caribbean paradises.

Actually, there have been pollution problems from raw sewage at Tobacco Bay in the past...and these problems were well-publicized years before the current situation on the South Shore. Not surprisingly, the problems are caused by a sewage outfall pipe near Tobacco Bay.

Unfortunatly this is true. The outfall pipes go out about a mile. As I understand there are two, one is near Tobacco Bay and the other is near Elbow Beach. Under normal circumstances the sewage goes out far into the Atlantic beyond the reefs. But in some not normal weather conditions it gets washed back in. I understand it is monitored.

 

I have been at these beaches and the water has always been visibly clear. That is the normal condition and I never got any illness. That said I think it is time that Bermuda treat its sewage and not dump it in the ocean.

Thanks for the info! I won't take the chance and swim in the water and neither will my wife. We both have sensitive skin and it would suck big time if something would happen to myself or her. Too bad I'm past final payment unless I would've switched to another destination.

I see you are on a May 3 sailing. In all honesty the water would likely be too cold anyway on your date to swim in the water or swim for long. Even the end of May the water temp. is on the cool side. Also it is the season for jellyfish. I only book June to September now because personally I found from I experience could not endure the cool Bermuda water temperature in May.

 

There is plenty to do in Bermuda besides swim. I have gone many times with friends who never went to the beach, some are not beach people, and they had a great time.

Only beach I like is cococay, but my wife loves anything to do with water. I just want to take a tour and stay in the casino honestly lol

Oh you didn't discourage US from going to Bermuda. And I appreciate you posting the information! We will be making final payment next week for our trip this summer.

It's my present to my youngest son for his 18th birthday and his high school graduation.

I asked this question on a roll call just back from Bermuda, but no one answered if they saw any warnings. They did say they went swimming at Horseshoe Bay Beach.

 

 

I will be swimming. Been going there swimming for 14 years. I usually go to Horseshoe Bay which has lifeguards that police the beach. I never saw warnings about pollution posted but several times there have been warnings about Jelly Fish and Man o War posted. So they do have a warning system. Also the lifeguards there have actually made everyone get out of the water if there was a swarm of Jelly fish. I hope if the water is unsafe we would be warned. The newspaper articles and consulate warning never present any evidence that anyone has ever gotten sick. Still as I said before I think that its time for Bermuda to treat the sewage instead of sending it a mile out and hoping does not wash back in to the island waters when there is bad weather.

If you go to the US CDC website and start searching for recommended vaccinations for popular Caribbean ports, you will see a typhoid and Hep A on just about every listing including St. Thomas.
