Does Princess have set event nights for all ships on a 7 night cruise, in particular:

  1. Sailaway party
  2. Formal dinners
  3. Captains party
  4. Sea nights

Also is there a standard of dress in the speciality restaurants and when attending the Sailaway and Captains party and is everyone invited?

Also which event should not be missed?

  1. Sailaway party -- always on embarkation day
  2. Formal dinners -- usually (but not always) on the first sea day and the last sea day unless that is the last evening of the cruise
  3. Captains party -- on the first formal evening
  4. Sea nights -- Different ships may have similar activities, but not necessarily on the same nights of a cruise

Also is there a standard of dress in the speciality restaurants (smart casual, no shorts) and when attending the Sailaway (anything you want) and Captains party (it's on a formal evening, but dressing that way is not a requirement) and is everyone invited (yes)?

Thanks Caribill

When does the sailaway party usually commence (is that when the champagne tower is poured) and do you get a free glass of champagne

Also has the first formal night and the sailaway party occured on the same night and which event,in your opinion, should not be missed

Cheers

Sail away begins usually around 4:00 pm on most cruises. You will have to pay for your drinks.

Champagne tower event is held on the first formal night and yes, you'll get a glass of champagne.

No, sail away party and formal night are held on 2 different days.

I usually don't miss sail away on decks 14 and 15. I'm usually on deck 15 by the bar to better hear the sound of the horn blowing!

Have a great time!

If you check your itinerary it will tell you the dress code and formal nights. If you read your patter as soon as you board in your cabin and then daily it will tell you of the daily events and parties. You will get your invitation to the captain's party. The sail away parties are always announced for each port.

Our Alaska cruise has the last sea day on our last evening. Any idea how will this affect the formal nights? We are doing the Inside Passage RT from Vancouver.
Formal night is not on the last evening because they want suitcases packed and set out for pick up before dinner if possible. If you are doing Tracy Arm, the cruise ends with two sea days so formal night will be the first of the two sea days. If you are doing Glacier Bay it will probably the day at Glacier Bay. The next to the last day is Ketchikan and scheduled departure is 6:00. Highly doubt they will have a formal night then.

The Champagne Tower is held in the Atrium. Waiters walk around with glasses of champagne, but also have other pre made drinks, like rum punch, sours, non alcoholic punch. If you want say a glass of wine or soda just ask, but you may have to wait. They also have munchies like cheese puffs etc.

You're probably thinking of the Captain's Circle party for past passengers. Invitations are left in the cabin for returning passengers with date and time and one is supposed to take the card with them to the party. Usually now, there are different parties based on loyalty level. And they won't be listed in the Patter. Sometimes the ones we've been invited to haven't been on formal night, so I guess smart casual is the expected wear.

The Captains Welcome party is something different: for all passengers and is usually located in a big open area such as the grand atrium. Sometimes it's easy enough to get a free drink (albeit watered down) and sometimes it's hard to intercept a server. Usually on the first formal night. But you may see passengers who are not dressed up (they may be headed for the Horizon court buffet or a specialty restaurant (which is always smart casual or better -- some people do get dressed up to eat there), or they may be eating much later and haven't gotten dressed yet).

The champagne waterfall may be on a different night, usually on a formal one.

Sailaway is a casual thing. Always after the mandatory muster drill. Depending on the cruise director, it may be a party, or not. No activities. Hopefully a live band, but again, just depends. And depending on the port, you might get a nice send off from onlookers (if leaving from Los Angeles, for example, you'll pass a couple of restaurants at Ports O'Call where diners at the outside table will wave to you). It won't be like the Love Boat series -- no throwing streamers off of the ship. Beverage servers will be circulating around, but the drinks are not free.

As someone said, you'll can read which nights are formal and which ones are smart casual for the main dining rooms by looking at the Patter (the ship's newsletter) for the first day -- just look at page 4.

On some itineraries (depending on the CD), there may be fun nights for dancing and partying on the deck. It was called the Ultimate Deck Party on our last cruise or two. No special dress, but since we were on the Hawaiian cruise and it was on one of our port days, most people were showing off their new aloha shirts or dresses they'd just bought.

As for what not to miss...it depends on what you're interested in. Some people try to do it all on their first cruise, some decide they'll do more cruises and won't worry about cramming their days, in port or on board, with non-stop activities.

So if you check the patter on the first day you can plan for the full 7 nights is this correct? Thanks for information from all to date

Only which are formal evenings and smart casual evenings.

Other activities may be listed, but will not have specific days attached to them.

On course embarkation day activities will be listed.

I'm not sure if all Princess ships are the same, but here is a sample showing the Dress suggestions for the MDR. This was on Page 2 of the Embarkation Day Patter:

Menus for the MDR are not all posted in advance. You can find them daily either outside the MDR entrance doors or in the Horizon Court (on Royal Princess these were at the aft entrance to the HC).

The menu for the Chef's Table is not posted in advance, and the night in which it is held depends on the ships itinerary and length of cruise.

...and Page 4 will have the ships venues and hours of operations, which can change daily depending on if the ship is at sea or in port...

Thanks very much for the information and scans of Princess Patter, looking forward to driving the wife crazy with what to do each day ;)

Thanks, just means it's been too long since my last cruise.

To the OP, it's more fun if you don't plan, IMO. We'll often check the dinner menu after lunch just to think about what we want to eat, and I'll go through the Patter each night for the next day to narrow down (sometimes that is so hard to do:D) what I might do or what show/movie we might do. But nothing is set in stone except going to dinner around 8:15 (or whenever our seating is).
