skeeter195 Posted April 1, 2014 #1 Share Posted April 1, 2014 Is anyone going on the Nov 9th Epic poker cruise? I am going with my wife and I will be playing in the tournaments. I have not seen mention of this from anyone else though. NCL has been running satelite tournaments on their ships for entry into the main event, the $1000 buy-in. I spoke with casino hosts on the Gem and it looks to be a good time. There will be seperate rooms set-up for the tournaments. Also, I am looking for a main event voucher for a buddy who is going with us. If someone has a voucher and cannot go, it is transferable. Anyway, can't wait to go and hope to see some of the players that I played with on previous cruises.
UhOhChango Posted April 1, 2014 #2 Share Posted April 1, 2014 This sounds very cool. What ships have the satelite tournys?
Love my butler Posted April 1, 2014 #3 Share Posted April 1, 2014 Any gambling sponsored or presented by NCL is gonna be a huge revenue generator for NCL. That revenue is coming from you the passenger. I steer clear of these for just that reason.

I steer clear of these for just that reason. A NLH holdem Tournament is not exactly gambling in the true sense of the word. In doing so you are not playing cards, you are playing people and there is much more skill and knowledge involved in NLH than there is in gambling per se'. NCL will still be fleecing the players for lots of dough.
skeeter195 Posted April 2, 2014 Author #6 Share Posted April 2, 2014 When I was on the Gem in February, I was told that the tournaments were being offered on all ships. As far as "steering clear" of these types of cruises, I have always found that most poker players are very friendly and a fun bunch to be around. At the table we are fierce competitors, but away from the table we like to have fun and enjoy ourselves. The image of back room games and seedy characters is a thing of the past for the most part. Froggitt Posted April 3, 2014 #7 Share Posted April 3, 2014 They usually have satellites on the first few sea days (played on the BJ tables), and then a final on the last sea day. If there aren't enough entries (30???) then the winner gets cash rather than an entry to the final.
Froggitt Posted April 4, 2014 #8 Share Posted April 4, 2014 I agree the tourney fee makes this a very poor proposition. $25 from 40 players over say two at sea days is a cool grand for a few hours of dealer time.
Big Chippy Posted April 9, 2014 #9 Share Posted April 9, 2014 Played in a $60 (entry) tournament on the Spirit last week, rebuys and addons were allowed in the first hour. 25% of the take was taken by the house! pretty steep. They paid out on first three places. Only 11 players 1st $730 2nd $430 3rd $280 so plenty of addons and rebuys, I finished 2nd with neither:) They did not have a qualifying tourney for the main event. Froggitt Posted April 10, 2014 #10 Share Posted April 10, 2014 How was the cash game Chippy? In December it didn't really start until about 10.30pm most nights. Few nights didn't run at all. Was the easiest game ever.....full of orange ex-pats who play rubbish games at home in Benidorm. Paid for my cruise!!!

Hi Froggitt didn't play the cash games more's the pity if the tournament play was anything to go by. More than a few poor players who also played cash but didn't want to upset the wife by playing:rolleyes: The guy who eventually won the tourney had entry, rebuys and an addon amounting to $360 and another guy had at least $300 worth! By the way the food in the main dining rooms was mixed at best, definitely not up to last years standard. That said the wait staff were great and did their best. mags1023 Posted July 28, 2014 #12 Share Posted July 28, 2014 I was on the NCL Jewel a couple of weeks ago (Jul 5-12) to Alaska and I won the only qualifying tournament that week. The first tourney of the week was the only one that had enough entrants/re-buys/add-ons to bring the 1st place prize to an entry in the main event. I am still not sure if I am going to go or sell my seat, so if you are interested in buying it let me know. Has anyone played in the main event for Norwegian in the past?? Does the payout normally reach the $200,000 that they advertise? We will probably go on the cruise if there is going to be some good poker action, so we don't have to play against the house. The casino was very tight with very few winners and many many losers. We play a lot at casinos throughout the US and it was by far the hardest to play. Especially, the table games like 3 card poker and ultimate Texas Hold'em. The staff is ultra friendly though and I did hit a jackpot on the video poker the last night, but it did not make up for our losses throughout the rest of the cruise. DevonianCruiser Posted August 3, 2014 #13 Share Posted August 3, 2014 In March last year I went on the Explorer (RC) and entered their tourney which was $100. I one my heat out of 9 and made the final table. There were loads of sea days so there was about $7,000 in buys, re buys and add one. 3rd place was $700, 2nd was $1,000 and 1st was a cruise. I played extremely tight until the final table of 9 was down to 5 then I went for it. I was playing for 2nd or 3rd as I wanted cash. By the final 3 I played fairly loose but I just kept hitting on the flop and ended up winning. Only reason I didn't really a want to win was it was in December and I had to get airfare to Miami from the UK. Prize was a week for two on the Oasis and entry into their grand final. As it happened it was a fantastic cruise on an amazing ship and I'm glad I won. Value was around $2,500 as Oasis is quite a pricey ship. So it shows the rake the house takes . . . . That still, I'm on holiday and playing for a bit of fun so whilst I think the house take is a rip off I also realise that I'm part of a captive audience out to enjoy myself. If the Jade has one next week I'll do that too, regardless of whether it's a bad deal or not :D

I won a satellite on the Getaway and have a entry to the main event but I'll actually be in Vegas that week for SEMA. I am looking to sell it. Will your friend be interested? Thanks Skeeter, my entry states "Your $1,000 + $100 entry fee for the main event has been paid." Considering that is $1,100, I was thinking $800? If he wants it, we can call NCL together and have it transferred.

Jllagun014, I'll take it for lot less than 800, just to have something different to do. At least, your friend won't get nothing out of the entry. Their call. Hope he/she gets as much as they can.
