Lahaina to Haleakaka

It takes close to 3 hours to drive to the trailhead for the Pipiwai Trail, and another 3 back, and you would want to allow 2 hours for the hike. You would likely want to make some other stops along the way too. The day we did it, we left Kaanapali (which is about 10 minutes north of Lahaina) at 7 a.m. and returned around 7 p.m. Not sure what time you'll be able to get the rental at, but I don't think it's possible.

The Waihee Ridge Trail is a good hike, and it only takes an hour to get there from Lahaina. Or, you could drive up to the summit of Haleakala and do part of the Sliding Sands trail (the drive takes 2 hours each way.)

p.s. Just a note that there are two parts to Haleakala Park - the summit and the coastal area. Different routes to each, and you can't access the summit from the coastal area (or vice versa) without a very long drive around the volcano. Here's the route from Lahaina to the summit. The Pipiwai Trail is in the coastal area.

Add to any time calculations, there is no pier in Lahaina. You will be tendered. Most ships give first tender priority to those booking the ship's tours. Once you are on shore you have to make your way to the car rental agency (and back when you are done.)

We docked on the other side of the island. We left the ship at around 7:00 am to drive to Haleakala. There is a neat little store that sells baked goods on the drive up the mountain. The scenery is breathtaking at times. If you have time, drive to Makawao. It has some interesting shops by local artists.
