midwestchick Posted May 6, 2014 #1 Share Posted May 6, 2014 (edited) I've been following Cinnamon's live Quest thread and know she's had some nasty weather. I just read about the tornado in Italy...hoping that did not affect and cruise pax on any of the cruise ships. Learned something new...I didn't realize Italy was affected by tornadoes. :o   Edited May 6, 2014 by midwestchick

Learned something new...I didn't realize Italy was affected by tornadoes. :o   I bet you didn't know that Italy has earthquakes, either. My daughter has been living in Florence for the past three years and she's felt one or two. The tornado that you're referring occurred in the Bologna and Modena area, north of Florence. My daughter said the weather has been rainy and on the cool side this past week. The Azamara Quest is in the south of the country hundreds of miles away. Tornadoes are powerful but not so far reaching that they'd affect Sorrento or Sicily where the Quest is sailing. I wouldn't say the weather was nasty--just typical spring weather. People have this idea of the Amalfi Coast being balmy and serene because it's south, but there are very distinct seasons. You live in the Midwest same as me. The weather we've been getting, ie, high 70s low 80s sunny and calm and howling with rain and 40s the next? Italy gets weather like that too. It's a hazard of booking a cruise in the Spring. You can get lovely warm weather. Or not. Spring is nothing if not capricious. Cinnamon mentioned in her live report about the seas being choppy at Sorrento. This happens a lot down there and it's one reason that you can't depend on ferry service. When the waves kick up the ferry gets cancelled. Ask me how I know this.

We did see a few people experiencing the "sea sick vomiting" on tenders a couple of times. May is supposed to be a lovely time to visit Italy...but I will definitely remember their weather patterns. Our spring has been horrible ...hopefully we are finally beginning to turn it around.

We'll be on the Journey on the 12th--only a few more days to go!--so you'll hear about the weather when I get back and write a report. Stay tuned! (just to be on the safe side I'm packing layers to be prepared for warm and cool ;))

Bobal Posted May 6, 2014 #8 Share Posted May 6, 2014 (edited) My son lives in Salerno - I can assure you the weather has not been nasty. Yes, they've had some rainy days, which is par for the course at this time of year, but it's been mild and they've had a lot of sunshine - and it's getting hotter by the day :) I'm an avid watcher of the Salerno webcams so I can see what weather he's getting (and look on in envy). There are many webcams on that coast if you want to take a peek http://www.campaniameteo.it/webcam.php Edited May 6, 2014 by Bobal
kikki21 Posted May 6, 2014 #9 Share Posted May 6, 2014 There's been quite a few earthquakes in Italy and we also get them here in the UK as well as tornados! They are pretty rare though! I'm hoping the weather sorts itself out for the end of next month when we'll be in the Quest! :)

cinnamon Posted May 6, 2014 #11 Share Posted May 6, 2014 It was a glorious day in Sorrento and Capri today. The wind from yesterday had died down and the Tenders were much easier. While it was cooler at the start of the week than we had expected, it has certainly warmed up now.
