Question: Port side vs. starboard side

We have been on 4 cruises in the past, we always get a balcony or mini suite on the starboard side. Was wondering if there are any advantages/disadvantages on which side your on or is it just personal preference? Also does anyone know where the designated smoking area's are on the Ruby? Appreciate the help.

Really no difference. What makes a difference is what is above and below your cabin. Have not been on the Ruby, but on the sister ships the Crown and Emerald, smoking areas are limited. Usually:

A small area of the promenade, where the fire containment ashtrays are attached to the bulkhead, a section of tables on the Lido deck by Neptune's Reef Pool, an area on the deck above the pool near the Tradewinds Bar, and also a small area aft on the same deck where the walkway ends, the port side of the Horizon Terrace, The Casino (sometimes smoke free), Speakeasy cigar lounge. No smoking in cabins or on balconies.

I know it's not the question you asked, but I have never been bothered by smoke on either side of the ship (on my balcony, I mean.) At least once I know I was under Lido deck on the smokers' side but didn't know it until it was pointed out to me.

The only times I care are:

If there is a beautiful daytime sailaway or sail in. Then I want the side with the best view. An example is Venice, where you want to face the city.

If one side of the ship will get the sun most days in the late afternoon & early evening. Then I will pick the side away from the sun. We prefer not to have the glare in our eyes. An example would be cruising from Fort Lauderdale to Buenos Ares. The cruise in mainly heading south, so the east (port) side would be out of the sun for us.
