syr101 Posted June 17, 2014 #1 Share Posted June 17, 2014 First time cruising to Hawaii. We rented a car in Maui through car rental. we chose Avis and the pick up is in Kaanapali. Does this seem correct.
CruiserBruce Posted June 17, 2014 #2 Share Posted June 17, 2014 (edited) The car rental site is in Kaanapali, yes. Assuming you are coming ashore in Lahaina, not Kahalui. You will need a shuttle or taxi to get to the car lot. It is a 10-15 minute drive. Edited June 17, 2014 by CruiserBruce
syr101 Posted June 17, 2014 Author #3 Share Posted June 17, 2014 Thanks, Lahaina is where we are docking.
CruiserBruce Posted June 17, 2014 #4 Share Posted June 17, 2014 Thanks, Lahaina is where we are docking. Lahaina is a tender port.
syr101 Posted June 17, 2014 Author #5 Share Posted June 17, 2014 With Lahiana being a tender port, is it more of a problem renting a car or any useful info I should know.
Cruisin' Chick Posted June 18, 2014 #6 Share Posted June 18, 2014 With Lahiana being a tender port, is it more of a problem renting a car or any useful info I should know. It just means that the ship will anchor in the water and you'll take tenders (small boats) to the pier in Lahaina. Those who have morning excursions booked through the cruiseline (and probably those with high loyalty status on the cruise line -- eg. if elite on Princess, and perhaps those who have booked a suite) will get first priority for the tenders. Everyone else will get instructions to get tickets and where to wait until your number is called. Once you get to the pier, you're within walking distance of the taxi area, unless you were told there will be an Avis shuttle to the rental agency. (make sure you ask and if you need to take a taxi there, get the address for their office, even though perhaps the taxi driver might know). I wouldn't try the bus (even though it would be much cheaper) as you may have to wait for a while (plus the pickup area can be difficult to find as it's behind the Cinema Wharf Center). Ka'anapai is maybe about six miles so once you get a taxi (or shuttle), it shouldn't take you too long. BTW, there's a nice beach and shopping center (Whalers Village) right there. PCWalton1 Posted June 19, 2014 #7 Share Posted June 19, 2014 The rentals routinely run shuttles when the cruise ship is in. Call them and confirm.
swoonx Posted June 19, 2014 #8 Share Posted June 19, 2014 (edited) Yes, they have a pick up service and will pick you up wherever you want. (Compare the prices with Budget, it's the same company and they share the same cars.) Edited June 19, 2014 by swoonx
