FlightMedic555 Posted July 21, 2014 #1 Share Posted July 21, 2014 Any suggestions as to what to do/see in Fredericia. The offerings from the cruise line are thin.
Danish viking Posted July 21, 2014 #2 Share Posted July 21, 2014 In no particular order. Ribe Odense (including the HC Andersen birthplace) Legoland (but only with kids) Koldinghus Egeskov castle
FlightMedic555 Posted July 21, 2014 Author #3 Share Posted July 21, 2014 Thanks. I am thinking about Egeskov Castle but the only way to get there is to rent a car. SiXT has a car (I asked for a full size as I am tall) for about $150 USD. The only other way to get there is via a ships excursion which is $300 per person. Is it logical to rent a car for the day (they would pick me up at the pier)? Approximately how long is the drive to the Castle?
Danish viking Posted July 21, 2014 #4 Share Posted July 21, 2014 Well public transportation is out of the question as it takes 2 hours!!!! By car it takes around 1 hour. https://www.google.dk/maps/dir/Fredericia+Havn+A%2FS,+Vesthavnsvej+33,+7000+Fredericia/Egeskov+Castle,+Egeskov+Gade+18,+5772+Kv%C3%A6rndrup/@55.2724502,10.0162529,10z/data=!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x464c90d829fbe035:0x1f6f55b34fe0e3ab!2m2!1d9.741898!2d55.559882!1m5!1m1!1s0x464d2f03d878aa21:0x466d99812d93b14!2m2!1d10.490216!2d55.176198!3e0
abelthi Posted November 23, 2014 #5 Share Posted November 23, 2014 In the same line of thought, how long should we plan for visiting Egeskov Castle and/or Koldinghus Castle ?
Danish viking Posted November 23, 2014 #6 Share Posted November 23, 2014 2 hours for transportation and 2-3 hours inside and outside the castle. + time to collect and deliver your rental car.

Would be interested to know your plans:) Hi Prish, We're on the May 16 sailing of the Silhouette... Our plans look exactly the same. Was hoping to be able to do Koldinghus as well, but from Danish_viking's info, might not be possible. Anyway... I always have a tendancy to make our plans too busy... we'll take it easy :D Happy planning !
Danish viking Posted November 24, 2014 #11 Share Posted November 24, 2014 Thanks for your reply. When you say 2-3 hours in and out of castle... Is this each castle or for the 2 ? The castle also has a maze in the garden and other stuff located outside the castle itself. I don´t think Koldinghus can be fitted in aswell, I wouldn´t do it. http://www.egeskov.dk/en

I always have a tendancy to make our plans too busy... we'll take it easy :D Happy planning ! Thanks abelthi, I also generally try and fit in too much. But we'd have had 2 busy days in St Petes plus the long trek to Berlin and back, so am trying to keep Fredericia relatively easy. We overnight in Copenhagen the next day, again lots to see and do, but the Baltics itinerary is extremely port intensive. Happy travels:)
Danish viking Posted November 25, 2014 #13 Share Posted November 25, 2014 If you want to stay close to Fredericia then Koldinghus or Legoland would be my best guesses. Fredericia is a charming town and is where I did my time in the army but its all done in 1 hour or 2. Btw there is a new tourist attraction nearby, you can get a guided walking tour on top of the old Lillebælt bridge 60 meters up in the air. The bridge is around 2 kilometers long. Danish viking Posted November 25, 2014 #14 Share Posted November 25, 2014 But Odense as suggested earlier is only 30 minutes away with the intercity train towards Copenhagen. There are 2 departures every hour.
The Viking Posted November 25, 2014 #15 Share Posted November 25, 2014 Been at all places mentioned, I would without doubt rent a car and go to Ribe. One hour each way Also, Ribe is essy to get to via train. 1,5 hrs each way. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ribe

prish Posted November 25, 2014 #19 Share Posted November 25, 2014 Danish Viking, this bridge sounds interesting, how does one get there, any public transport from town or would we need a car? Do we need to book tickets in advance or can we just get them there on arrival? Would you have a link to this by any chance? Thanks in advance:)
Danish viking Posted November 25, 2014 #20 Share Posted November 25, 2014 The bridge walking starts in Middelfart (yes I know its funny) just across the water from Fredericia. The website is brand new like the attraction but keep and eye on this website. http://bridgewalking.dk/ Try to translate this website. http://www.visitmiddelfart.dk/fyn/bridge-walking-brovandring
Danish viking Posted November 25, 2014 #21 Share Posted November 25, 2014 So would you say Ribe or the castle? Thanks I know the question wasn´t pointed at me but I would take Egeskov if I had to choose.
The Viking Posted November 25, 2014 #22 Share Posted November 25, 2014 I would go to Ribe but I am certain you will enjoy either one. It may be the most interesting city you will visit on your cruise,- size considering.
Danish viking Posted November 25, 2014 #23 Share Posted November 25, 2014 What can Ribe offer? I have never been to that part of Denmark before, unless you count a cartrip from Esbjerg to buy some beer south of the border. :D But we passed Ribe on the highway but from there it didn´t look that interesting. I know about the small river and the cathedral and that they have a history with viking settlements but else I´m lost.

Danish viking Posted November 26, 2014 #25 Share Posted November 26, 2014 Since its only 20 people per tour and I don't know how many they do on a day its probably best to book the tour when the booking opens. I can imagine that when the cruise line gets hold off that idea they will try to sell it to you for twice as much. :D
