tbmrt Posted August 30, 2014 #1 Share Posted August 30, 2014 Definitely want to go to Coki to snorkel and would like to have a bit of time to shop also enroute back to ship. Would it be efficient and/or less expensive just to take a cab from ship to beach and one back to shop near ship or should I take a tour that includes both? (approximately $35 pp - we have 4 or 6 people). Thanks
blue_water Posted August 30, 2014 #2 Share Posted August 30, 2014 For your May cruise you'll be docked at Crown Bay and the roundtrip taxi to Coki and back to Charlotte Amalie and then back to Crown would be in the neighborhood of ~$27. You're not tied to a specific timetable and it's a little cheaper. We'd go on our own simply because we like the flexibility and freedom that offers but that's our personal preference. But if the tour gives you enough time at Coki I'm sure that's a popular option. Have a great cruise! :)
2PinaColadas Posted August 31, 2014 #3 Share Posted August 31, 2014 Personally, we like the freedom of a taxi. They are easy to catch at both the port and Coki. Plus, you can spend as much time as you wish enjoying the beach. Most tours only give you about 2 hours at the beach. Not nearly enough time, IMO. Have fun. blue_water Posted August 31, 2014 #5 Share Posted August 31, 2014 STT is so easy to get around with the taxi system there is no need for a tour unless you want a guided tour. For transportation you want to just hop a taxi on your own timeline.
Ms411 Posted August 31, 2014 #6 Share Posted August 31, 2014 Sometimes the tours have "added value" like chairs, drinks, narration, photo op stops, and/or who knows what else. If you just want maximum beach time, take a taxi. There are shops at the dock so you have flexibility to shop before or after the beach. If you want possibly a few extras, take the tour. lilbits67 Posted August 31, 2014 #7 Share Posted August 31, 2014 We are interested in going to Coki beach first thing in the morning to get in some good snorkeling before it gets crowded. We then want to do a little sight seeing on the way back to the ship and maybe get dropped up at Paradise Point. Do you think it would be cheaper to use taxis or rent a car? Since you can walk back to the ship from the PP tram station I'd taxi to Coki early, and taxi back to PP with a driver who will provide a mini-tour (Drake's Seat, Skyline Drive). Ms411 Posted August 31, 2014 #9 Share Posted August 31, 2014 Depends on how many in your group and how comfortable the driver is with hills, bad drivers, driving on the left, and winding roads. A rental car gives you the option of checking out several beaches in a short period of time which is easy to do on St Thomas. Call it Speed Beaching if you only want to snap photos and go to next beach, which some people do. If you want a relaxing beach day, taxi probably your best option. Let someone else drive so everybody can talk and enjoy cold beverages on the way back to the ship.
