grtsmom Posted September 4, 2014 #1 Share Posted September 4, 2014 How formal or unformal is the dining room? We leave on the Naviagtor next month, and trying to figure out what to bring... We cruised 10 years ago, and only went to the dining room to eat twice...
Clarea Posted September 4, 2014 #2 Share Posted September 4, 2014 Here's what Royal says: http://www.royalcaribbean.com/customersupport/faq/details.do?pagename=frequently_asked_questions&pnav=5&snav=2&faqId=255&faqSubjectId=334&faqSubjectName=Life+Onboard&faqType=faq However, nothing is enforced. BamaGuy44 Posted September 4, 2014 #3 Share Posted September 4, 2014 (edited) Here we go. :D The "official" guidelines are here: http://www.royalcaribbean.com/beforeyouboard/whatToKnow/whatToPack.do In practice some people follow the guidelines, some don't. You'll see everything from T shirts to tuxedos. They're definitely not strictly enforced. You'll find much less formal dress than 10 years ago I'm sure. Use your own judgement. Edit: Of course Bob beats me to it haha. Edited September 4, 2014 by BamaGuy44
Annicruise2014 Posted September 4, 2014 #4 Share Posted September 4, 2014 We went formal the first night. It was a treat to get fancy. I compromised with DH and we went casual for the 2nd formal night. We were not the only ones. I didn't want to ruin others formal night so we didn't wear shorts but again others did. xxoocruiser Posted September 4, 2014 #5 Share Posted September 4, 2014 RCCL does not have a Mandatory Dress Code rather it's only "Suggested Guidelines" therefore it's not enforceable. You will find a mix of dress including formal nights. Wear what's comfortable for you and go enjoy your cruise.

lrskier Posted September 4, 2014 #7 Share Posted September 4, 2014 Just back. Do what your party wants to do. You will see Tux to T shirts, Diamonds to denim. We wore nice shorts & Hawaiian style shirts with sandals, then long sleaves on formal night but no jackets or gowns in our luggage. Hide liquor disembarking. Texas is charging duty! And on smokes if you do..
CruiseTobey Posted September 5, 2014 #8 Share Posted September 5, 2014 OP, It is universally known that casual but neat is acceptable attire on any night, but you could dress more formally if you'd like. RCL doesn't care so long as you bring your wallet. Since the concept of formal night is gradually being phased out by the fare-paying public anyway, those who are holding to the "tux and gown" standard are just delaying the inevitable. But to each his own. Have a great time.

nascar junkie Posted September 5, 2014 #11 Share Posted September 5, 2014 Depends on where you are from. If from England or their posessions, then anything less than a tux and gown is considered uncivilized. If you're from Oklahoma, then overalls and halter tops are considered formal. If you're from anywhere else, then a nice shirt/trousers and maybe a sport coat and a dress is fine. All depends on what you feel OK with and how dressy you want to get.;)

m*u*g* Posted September 5, 2014 #13 Share Posted September 5, 2014 Guidelines aside, use your own discretion. Doesn't seem to be enforced strictly anyway.
LizzieandLuke Posted September 5, 2014 #14 Share Posted September 5, 2014 We were on the Freedom and Formal nights everyone was relatively dressed up but few tuxes, gowns. On casual nights half of the men were in khaki shorts. M hubby counted cause I said if he got up to 10 he could wear them the next night - he got up to 20 before we were seated:p

Grammy J Posted September 6, 2014 #16 Share Posted September 6, 2014 It's been several years since we have sailed on RCCL. Seriously, are shorts REALLY allowed in the dining room for men and women? I would never have believed it if I hadn't read it on here. May change the way we pack for our next cruise on the Jewel.
Johnamac123 Posted September 6, 2014 #17 Share Posted September 6, 2014 On most evenings, dress is semi formal for men. Women are encouraged to wear as little as possible...

boxermom711 Posted September 6, 2014 #21 Share Posted September 6, 2014 Sailed on Navigator last year. On formal nights our group all dressed very nice. On other nights we wore skirts, maxi dresses & even very nice black jeans with nice blouses. Our group never wore shorts Sent from my iPhone using Forums
Grammy J Posted September 6, 2014 #22 Share Posted September 6, 2014 I just can't pictures shorts in the dining room on any of the RCCL ships we have sailed on. I know, times are a changing, but some things should remain. Oh well, each to their own. The debate will continue.......
pcur Posted September 6, 2014 #23 Share Posted September 6, 2014 (edited) I'm actually reading the OP's question as more general in regards to what to wear in the dining room. I just wear what I would normally wear to a nice restaurant on land for nights other than formal. Formal nights are dressy tops and jackets for me, since I don't like wearing long formal dresses. My husband wears collared shirts to dinner most nights, and tropical shirts in darker, more subdued, prints. These are worn with dark, tan, or grey slacks. Formal nights he wears a dark jacket and slacks with a shirt and tie. Some cruises where we aren't extending the vacation on land and don't have to be concerned about luggage weight as much, he takes his tux. rjrpar Posted September 6, 2014 #24 Share Posted September 6, 2014 Agree with most of the previous posts that the dress code is trending more casual on all nights with little enforcement by RCCL. However, as you roam the ship on formal nites around the dinner times, you will notice a higher level of dress by most people which makes for a very nice atmosphere on those few evenings. That will not exist on the QOTS as the new dining system is introduced.
buckeye rob Posted September 21, 2014 #25 Share Posted September 21, 2014 On Caribbean Princess last month a gentleman had on a full kilt outfit. Assume he was from the UK, Scotland. Very nice, I really enjoyed that. I personally like dressing for the formal night.
