cessnabmw Posted September 9, 2014 #1 Share Posted September 9, 2014 We are first timers cruising as well as our first time in St. Kitts. Please help us plan our day here. We will be there on Dec 17th from 9am - 5pm on an Eastern Caribbean cruise with Carnival (from Fort Lauderdale). Our first stop is St. Maarten and we are thinking of renting a car there for teh day and driving all around. For St. Kitts is this an option too? Has anyone here done this? What is a must see? We are 2 adults and 2 kids (8 and 9). Thanks!
paul58 Posted September 9, 2014 #2 Share Posted September 9, 2014 It is very easy to rent a car in St Kitts. There are the big three rental outlets(Thrifty, Avis & Hertz) and several local operators. Driving is on the left and a local license has to be purchased( $24-25 US). Expect to pay about $40-$75 for the vehicle & about $10-15 for optional insurance. Gaynors Posted September 9, 2014 #3 Share Posted September 9, 2014 Do any of the rental agencies have locations at the port? We would also be interested for our upcoming Thanksgiving cruise...

Would do it this time around but too many ships in port :( and don't want to deal with the crowds.. will enjoy the ship...but have been to St. Maarten many times before. paul58 Posted September 9, 2014 #5 Share Posted September 9, 2014 The closest car rental to the port is Avis. It is a short walk from Port Zante.

If using a CC that provides insurance, would that suffice?
candydane Posted September 9, 2014 #7 Share Posted September 9, 2014 (edited) I've set up a webpage for: St. Kitts. It's an accumulation of information from all over the internet so it's as accurate & current as the website where I found it :D. Be sure to read my warning in red letters at the top of the webpage. The webpage is a good place to start planning activities then confirm the facts when making final decisions. paul58 Posted September 9, 2014 #11 Share Posted September 9, 2014 Your insurance coverage through you credit card is fine for your rental. The govt requires you to purchase the temp license. The rental agency will not rent without it.

If not, will pay for it to be on the safe side.
cessnabmw Posted September 11, 2014 Author #13 Share Posted September 11, 2014 Checked with my credit cards and none offer any insurance protection outside of North America. Any suggestion on who to book with for this day? Where would I be able to get the vehicle from? Port or somewhere else? Also - what coverages do I need to pay for? cessnabmw Posted September 12, 2014 Author #15 Share Posted September 12, 2014 Yes, I understand that the insurance is optional. I guess my question is, for those that have rented before, and don't have coverage through their CC, should I get the optional coverage or not?
