impatientlywaiting Posted September 24, 2014 #1 Share Posted September 24, 2014 Here's the article! http://www.wired.com/2014/09/conveyance-quantum-of-the-seas/ We love the Radiance and Vision class ships so not sure we're even interested in the bigger ships but it's interesting to watch their construction and the process involved in getting it 20 miles down a small river from the shipyard to the ocean! negc Posted September 24, 2014 #3 Share Posted September 24, 2014 And yet considerably smaller than Oasis and Allure. Has anyone explained why the shipyard is located so far from the sea and on such a narrow river? I imagine it was built when ships were much smaller but have they ever considered relocating to somewhere more easily accessible?
Clarea Posted September 24, 2014 #4 Share Posted September 24, 2014 And yet considerably smaller than Oasis and Allure. Has anyone explained why the shipyard is located so far from the sea and on such a narrow river? I imagine it was built when ships were much smaller but have they ever considered relocating to somewhere more easily accessible? I can't answer the question about why they don't relocate. However, I believe the narrow river is one of the major reasons that affected the design of the ship, specifically no wide Royal Promenade like the ships that come out of Turku and St. Nazaire. Moeve Posted September 24, 2014 #5 Share Posted September 24, 2014 It is not just about the yard. It also about all the specialists around the area delivering parts and services to the yard. This is a pretty rural area specilzied in ship building employing several thousands and that is simply not relocatable. Its those specialists that make Meyer so special and this combined volume of specialized know how that is simply not available just any where. If it were possible Meyer would have relocated years ago.

rolloman Posted September 24, 2014 #10 Share Posted September 24, 2014 Has anyone explained why the shipyard is located so far from the sea and on such a narrow river? I imagine it was built when ships were much smaller but have they ever considered relocating to somewhere more easily accessible? If you read the article it answers your question. "He founded the company in 1795, choosing a spot in Papenburg so construction projects would be safe from storms. "
Brian131489 Posted September 24, 2014 #11 Share Posted September 24, 2014 And yet considerably smaller than Oasis and Allure. Has anyone explained why the shipyard is located so far from the sea and on such a narrow river? I imagine it was built when ships were much smaller but have they ever considered relocating to somewhere more easily accessible? It was mentioned that when the yard was founded they chose to put it so far back to be out any bad weather conditions. That's why the conveyance was pushed off, they needed it to be perfect(little to no wind, high tide, full moon or new moon).
