drakie123 Posted October 12, 2014 #1 Share Posted October 12, 2014 Hi everyone, Need a bit of advice please. We will be on the MSC Splendida in less then a week. This cruise was a gift, and unfortunately our time to read-up on the towns, what to see & do was very limited, also because of other responsibilities. I know everyones taste differs as well as ideas of what to see and do. That I understand, but could appreciate everyones ideas. a. I would like to know what each of these towns (Genoa, Naples & Messina) has to offer on sights. We will probably be on foot, and might take a train or two if needed. b. And then also something different;-) What is unique to the are to buy? (Like the glass products from Venice) We will have a few hours in every town. * Genoa - 7 hours * Naples - 5 hours * Messina - 5 hours Thanks for all the input, I so appreciate all the information. snookie1 Posted October 21, 2014 #2 Share Posted October 21, 2014 My husband and I just returned from our Celebrity cruise of the Adriatic; one of our ports was Naples. The big things to do there include Pompeii, Capri, and the Amalfi Coast. We had done those before, so we just wandered around the city on foot. I had done a lot of research prior, and had a few places we definitely wanted to see: Capella San Severo (with the amazing marble statue: "Veiled Christ"), the via san grigorio armeno, which is a cute little street with lots of vendors selling unique nativity sets and other neat things, Il Duomo and Gesu Nuovo which are gorgeous churches, and the Archeological Museum which has the best antiquities from Pompeii and other places. We probably walked about 6 miles or more that day, and we took a cab back to the ship from the Museum! But we are "old people" and our pace was sort of slow. I think if you took a cab to Gesu Nuovo (we got a little lost), and then back from the museum, you could do it in 5 hours. Just invest in a good map of Naples. I hope you enjoy the city; we did! euro cruiser Posted October 21, 2014 #3 Share Posted October 21, 2014 A five hour stop in Naples is a tease, you really can't do much more than pick a few sights in the city. The typical objectives of Pompei, the Amalfi Coast, and Capri are impossible on this schedule. Naples offers so much within walking distance of the cruise port that you won't run out of options. Some of my favorites include: Santa Chiara: http://www.monasterodisantachiara.com/ San Martino: http://www.polomusealenapoli.beniculturali.it/museo_sm/museo_sm.html San Severo: http://www.museosansevero.it/en/ Teatro San Carlo: http://www.teatrosancarlo.it/ Castel Nuovo: http://www.comune.napoli.it/flex/cm/pages/ServeBLOB.php/L/EN/IDPagina/1372
