Hello there fellow cruise lovers! We are set to cruise on the Noordam on 12/22 and were hoping to be able to do the zip line in San Juan. However, I am thinking that that idea is done for as it will most likely be closed because it will be Christmas day. Thoughts??

We sailed into San Juan on a Christmas cruise a few years ago. HAL had few (if any) excursion offerings for that holiday. When we exited the cruise terminal we found plenty of tour operators right outside the gates. We ended up taking a great small bus tour of the area for a good price. Everyone, including the driver and guide, were feeling very festive and we had a grand time. There were even a few shops and an outdoors market open. We got great t-shirts to take home as gifts from the San Juan Hard Rock Café which was also open.

Remember too that in San Juan you'll have cell phone service with major US cell companies (like Sprint and Verizon) so you can call with Christmas wishes to all the folks at home the same way you could if you were home in the continental US. San Juan and St Thomas USVI are United States territories and the cell companies must provide regular continental US type service. We happened to be in St Thomas Christmas Eve day so we called family at home that day too :D:D

We always enjoy the scenic sidewalk outside the city walls along the water. Sometimes we go through the red gate and go back to the ship through Old San Juan. Sometimes we walk back the way we came. Being cat lovers, we love "speaking" to all the feral cats on the rocks. One Christmas Day we did this usual walk then went to Señor Frogs...not your typical Christmas but we had fun.

After returning to the ship, we sat on the balcony in the warm sunshine and called family and friends back home. They were surprised to hear from us and it gave us a connection to home on Christmas.

This just might be the best zip line in the Caribbean ...certainly the longest and highest at Torro Verde's "The Beast". I would highly recommend it and see if they are open Xmas day and see if you could get others from your roll call to join in

Cannot comment about excursions. Last time we were in San Juan over Christmas many stores and restaurants closed early on Christmas eve.

But they all seemed to be open on Christmas day. We went to a large grocery chain store and bought wine on Christmas morning....they were all open. We took a drive and saw quite a few people shopping. So, you may be in luck.

  • 2 weeks later...

If Christmas Day is at all similar to New Years Day, there won't be much open. We were there last year on the Eurodam, and while there was a festive atmosphere with lots of families out for a stroll, there wasn't a whole lot we could do beside join in, which we did, and it turned into a very pleasant experience!
