TRAVELIN LADY Posted June 15, 2004 #1 Share Posted June 15, 2004 I just had my hair colored for my cruise at a new salon. What should I have tipped the hairdresser that is the owner and what should I have tipped the shampoo girl?
Happy ks Posted June 16, 2004 #2 Share Posted June 16, 2004 There is nothing wrong with asking the owner "Do you accept gratuities?". I used to be asked all the time. Either they will tell you no need to tip, or it is up to you if you feel like it. Also, ask the owner if it is customary to tip the shampoo person. I used to get my hair cut by a friend at a different salon than ours (it is great to be the customer) and she did not want me to tip her shampoo girl, the girl was paid individually by all the stylist that used her, per shampoo. There is no set rule for every shop. I accepted tips from my clients if they wanted to tip me, most of my clients were male, though that may not make any difference. I was also in partnership in the salon, I was not a sole proprietor. Do not be embarrassed by the question, it is valid for you to ask. carol louise Posted June 16, 2004 #3 Share Posted June 16, 2004 Thank you, Travelin Lady for this post, and, Kathy, for your response. I've been having my hair cut for several years by someone who was a part owner of the salon, and have always tipped her (didn't even know she was part-owner at first). At the time of my most recent haircut, however, it came out in our conversation that she was about to become full owner (buying out the partner), so now I was wondering how (or whether) to ask about tipping at the time of my next haircut. "Do you still accept gratuities?" seems just the right kind of polite approach. Thanks again. CL
CruisinCelt Posted June 17, 2004 #4 Share Posted June 17, 2004 TravelinLady, if you will scan down a ways, you'll find another post on hairdreser tipping; I had asked about it awhile back, and the Board came thru with great answers, as always! I like the "Do you accept gratuities?" idea for when one is unsure--perfect way to ask!
