queen_kathy1 Posted December 10, 2014 #1 Share Posted December 10, 2014 Sailing the Jewel OTS this weekend and am so disheartened to see the weather forecast starting on Sat to be Rain Rain Rain throughout all of our southern caribbean ports. All the beach days I've planned seem like they'll be washed out. I know the rain comes/goes in the Caribbean but it's not the sunny vacation I've been dreaming and planning for the longest time. So very sad, end of rant. Any positive spin to this?
AeroBaldness Posted December 10, 2014 #2 Share Posted December 10, 2014 We started out a trip on Jewel out of Tampa in the rain. We skirted the edge of some thunderstorms for a few hours. We sat on the bed with the balcony door open and took in the light show and it was awesome. Seeing quite a bit of rain forecasted for our stop in Labadee next week. I've packed my swim gear to get in a good workout if it rain as rain has no impact on swimming. Not much of a positive spin, but it's some. drew0tonna Posted December 10, 2014 #4 Share Posted December 10, 2014 We'll be sailing along with you on Jewel this weekend. Rain comes and goes so we'll live with it. A rainy day on Jewel of the Seas beats sitting at home in the sunny cold.
bouhunter Posted December 10, 2014 #5 Share Posted December 10, 2014 (edited) OK I just checked the forecasts for St Thomas and St Lucia. Yes there is some rain in the forecast over the next week. But not every day. And as you noted, sometimes rain in the Caribbean just comes and goes and doesn't sit there all day. It is not necessarily going to "wash out" all your days or be sad. Go and enjoy! Pretty much every time our ship has stopped at Antigua it's rained part of the day. We laugh about it and enjoy our vacation. bouhunter Posted December 10, 2014 #7 Share Posted December 10, 2014 (edited) I wish I was going to be on the Jewel in the rain. :( That pretty much sums it up. We'll be in the Keys after Christmas. If it rains every day it will be better than snow............. Once a winter vacation is planned and paid for somewhere warm, I don't really see the point in looking at weather forecasts. It is what it is. Go and enjoy :) Edited December 10, 2014 by bouhunter

queen_kathy1 Posted December 10, 2014 Author #9 Share Posted December 10, 2014 A wet cruise is still better than not being on a cruise! Agreed. Absolutely it is. But after investing $10K into cruise/flights, etc etc. I can't help but feel disappointed. I know it is what it is and make the best of it. I know that fretting about it won't change it. I'm just venting. :( Hopefully it will be much better than the weatherman predicts!!
Rare orville99 Posted December 10, 2014 #10 Share Posted December 10, 2014 Two things we've found to be almost universally true in the Caribbean: 1) It rains somewhere on almost every island almost every day of the year, and 2) If you're on the proper side of the street, it will likely miss you:D Note: you may have to cross to the other side of the street when the next cloud comes by:D
cascargirl Posted December 10, 2014 #11 Share Posted December 10, 2014 I wouldn't worry too much about it. Prior to our Aruba vacation, we returned last night, the weather called for rain every day...On the flight down, a local woman advised to never believe the forecasts. We had one torrential downpour (which had to happen while we were out for a long walk...no worries, needed to shower anyways). We also had the occasional pop up shower but they were sporadic and came with plenty of sunshine. It sprinkled on me in the ocean, and my husband who was 50 feet away on the beach chair was totally dry!

radiojw Posted December 10, 2014 #14 Share Posted December 10, 2014 I advise everybody going on a caribbean cruise to bring ponchos (easily found on Amazon). On every cruise i've been on, I have had rain. Last year St. Lucia got nailed by a "100 year rain". The night before we were off the coast of Barbados and it was just dumping rain, lots of lighting, etc... Was an absolute blast! The best part was, nobody was outside at the pool area. I had free reign! But, rain at this time of year is common. One moment it will be sunny, then will rain for 120 seconds, then sunny again. I think I will be on the same cruise as you, so here is to hoping for an ultra sunny cruise!
RCI Cruisers 004 Posted December 11, 2014 #15 Share Posted December 11, 2014 I'd like to give positive feedback, but I've been to busy plowing out the driveway today. We have 6-10 inches forecast for overnight, so I'm sure I will have to get up early to plow out in the morning! Our long range forecast is for highs in the teens next week with more snow each day, but I will check in from time to time to see how that pesky tropical rain is doing ! Enjoy your cruise, and don't worry about that frostbite I got in my fingers !
dacsmom Posted December 11, 2014 #16 Share Posted December 11, 2014 It was forecasted to rain every day during my cruise in October, we never saw a drop of rain. I have learned never to look at the weather forecast for the Caribbean. Even if it does rain, it is usually for only a few minutes.
SPacificbound Posted December 11, 2014 #17 Share Posted December 11, 2014 It's the Caribbean, in December. :) I don't know where you are from, but I'm just guessing that raining in the Caribbean is better then your weather at home.
Justmekaren918 Posted December 11, 2014 #18 Share Posted December 11, 2014 My September cruise was forecasted for rain the whole 5 days, so I went out and bought a brand new umbrella and packed it and it was never needed! We didn't skirt far enough and got rained on for 5 minutes during a sea day. I saw 2 amazing light show from the area we had left like 40 minutes earlier. It was so cool I was getting the best sunset pictures of the cruise and behind was a electrical storm. Go with lots of music a book or so and a favorite back travel game project and find creative was to enjoy your cruise. You are on vacation! Enjoy! PCWalton1 Posted December 11, 2014 #19 Share Posted December 11, 2014 November 2013 we sailed from Ft Lauderdale to San Diego though the Panama Canal and you could count in minutes the times it was raining. And that is during one of the wetter months for the region. Don't sweat it, you will have a great time. :)
mollyeilis Posted December 11, 2014 #20 Share Posted December 11, 2014 In October on Vision we had rain. The rain wasn't in the ports. The rain was while we were at sea. For 24ish hours, rain. (and if only it had been warm rain! it was not!) That was seriously not fun. Especially since it pushed the smoking section solely into the casino, I'm highly sensitive to smoke, and we had an off-centrum cabin on the 7th floor. Not even one little bit of fun for me. I would have FAR preferred to have been at home for that 24ish hours. So hopefully the rain will only be when you're not trapped on the ship if you're sensitive like I am. Natmom Posted December 11, 2014 #21 Share Posted December 11, 2014 It seems that for every trip we have taken the forecast calls for rain and each time it has been fine. I think it blows over quickly in the Caribbean too a quick heavy downpour and then it is done.sometimes if it is really hot and humid the shower cools things down a bit. I'm sure you will have a great vacation.
PuterMonkey Posted December 11, 2014 #22 Share Posted December 11, 2014 (edited) So very sad, end of rant. Any positive spin to this? I find the sound of rain to be a very peaceful thing. Often even the Solarium areas end up deserted, so if there's one side that's dry you can sit and read and listen to the patter. (And enjoy a few extra consolation cookies) Thunderstorms at sea can be pretty awesome to watch. No, it's not the same. Our second trip was basically a washout too, so I get it. You just have to make the best of it though. See if you can find some indoor museums to visit on your ports. Make use pf the movie theater. This can happen to any vacation, anywhere you ever go.
