Last Minute Items In Miami

Often we are asked on this board where to pick up last minute items in Miami and where we recommend to go depends on the items(s) and where you are staying.

I wanted to mention that a new CVS opened on Brickell right near the Marriott. So those in that area rather than even walking to Mary Brickell Village which is relatively close to that location can just go to the CVS. It took over a location (can't remember the name but have been there) that was a Beer Restaurant.

We are spending this week in Miami having just arrived yesterday.

One other observation for now.

Most years we spend a week around this time of year in Miami. Have been doing this since 2007. That first time we saw more cranes in Miami and new high rises begin built than almost anywhere else we ever visited. Walking say on Brickell was not an easy task as you had to keep crossing back and forth. Places near Intercontinental such a Epic Hotel and Marriott Hotel were under construction.

With the economic collapse of 2008 eventually the buildings were largely completed but many remained vacant.

By 2010 buildings were filling with tenants and last year we started to see some cranes again with new high rises being built. Well, this year there are lots of cranes and a lot of construction activity underway.

Is that where the old Gordon Biersch was?

Yes, downtown Miami is nuts. The problem, and it is a huge one, it that Miami keeps giving out building permits for new highrises and the city is unable to widen the roads to accommodate the 25,000 new condos expected to hit the market.

Not only are the roads unable to accommodate the traffic, the sewage system is completely overwhelmed as it is and will imminently collapse as it cannot be fixed.

Miami's complete lack of urban planning ultimately result in a giant mess with another collapse of downtown real estate.

I love being downtown Miami at night. It's gorgeous.

BlueHerons, you are absolutely right about the name of the former restaurant.

Also, thank you so much for sharing the Thrillist site with me.

Keith

Let me know if you check out any of the restaurant recommendations!

We have to go to The Clevelander tomorrow night for a Christmas party so we'll be down there.

Have a blast and post what you see and do!

We walked a lot today including walking over to the Port Of Miami. There were four ships in port.

Today I saw something I've never seen.

I've always said that it is safe to walk the bridge because there is a pedestrian walkway and a barricade. I would never do this to embark or disembark with luggage but just to walk it's fun. As we were walking on the pedestrian walkway on the other side of the bridge some people were walking from the port to the bayside area and there is no walkway so they are walking on the road. That is crazy .

I will post some photos tomorrow.

So if you look to the right you see two people walking on the wrong side of the road and behind them and not in the photo were around eight more people.

This was one of four ships in port. This is Aida which is owned by an British-American Owned and caters to German Cruisers.

This time of year, Miami is decked out in Christmas Decorations.

We were all thrilled when the CVS opened, especially since it's open 24 hours a day.

Aren't the amount of cranes just amazing! It's crazy around here. If you see the crane that is located next to the JW Marriott in the lot right behind the TD Bank, they are building an 88 story building there! Actually, the family that is building it happens to own the building that the new CVS is in!

If you ever went to Tobacco Road, you would see that it's gone. Torn down already!

Blue Herons is correct, lots of new places to eat around here and downtown. American Social which is up in Fort Lauderdale just opened up here in Brickell right on the River. They spent a lot of money re-doing the place and it's really pretty. Lots of great beer.

Would be funny to run into you out and about this week!

Had a great day in South Beach today.

We walked over to the Intercontinental from our hotel and took at taxi to and from there.

People ask all the time how much.

Going was $18.00 with tip.

Return $21.00 with tip.

This can vary based on time of day/traffic.

Dropped off at 5th and Ocean. That was we could walk by all of the iconic hotels.

Great blog Keith! Yesterday was GORGEOUS ... I work downtown and it pains me to be in the office on days like these (at least I have a great view). Today is shaping up to be a mirror image of yesterday! Makes we want to play hooky the rest of the week!

Enjoy my hometown and the rest of your stay here in Miami!

Great posts Keith! You are in cjskids stomping ground at the Mandarin Oriental!

Carolyn, you'll love American Social! We have Sunday Brunch there anytime we are both off which is as much as possible!

The American Social here has a smaller menu with some higher prices than the one in Fort Lauderdale. We went last week with friends. The place is beautiful. I'll have to see if they are doing brunch. As they are so new, they are still working out some of the kinks.

Have you thought about taking Uber? It's a great service around here and less than the taxi.

We had another great day in Miami yesterday.

We walked over to the Port Of Miami. Three ships in port, but two are your traditional cruise ships.

Regent ship over at terminal J.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dKK-dXjVHbI/VJG5qJDa3oI/AAAAAAAAoIc/FhTjNP7YPoE/s1600/DSC_1745.jpg

Walked over to where the opera house and theaters are located.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hy_I2GGIZKM/VJG6oEtYanI/AAAAAAAAoJI/kLlHqIDTbr4/s1600/DSC_1751.jpg

Also we walked towards where some of the hotels are located which are mentioned on CC from time to time. I still prefer hotels that are more downtown but these are options too.

Last evening we were at the first of two Miami Heat Basketball Games we will attend. Each year we try to go to one and we walk to and from it from our Hotel.

We've seen the Miami teams with Lebron James, Ray Allen, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh. This one is minus James and Allen and with Bosh hurt only Wade was their from their recent championship teams. They lost to the Utah Jazz but it was a lot of fun and I actually root for other teams. On our walk back to the hotel there were lots of lights all around to enjoy.

Wednesday night we went over to the American Airlines Arena to see the first of two Miami Heat Games. They are not the team that we've seen the past few years with Lebron James no longer with the team and Chris Bosh injured but it was still a fun game to attend.

Before the game we went back to Perricone's for dinner. These are some photos of its unique interior.

Had another nice day in Miami yesterday. Normally we walk over to Key Biscayne (we are big walkers) or Coral Gables but yesterday sort of just repeated our walk around the downtown area. We walked back over to the Port Of Miami. It was a quiet day for the port with one cruise ship, Carnival, in port.

This is the bridge that we would walk over to Key Biscayne.

Nice pictures. That last shot that you got showing construction is where the new Whole Foods is opening in a few weeks.

cjskids, thank you.

Yes, when we were in Miami in January of this year we saw them working on the new Whole Foods and we have passed by there the past few days and thought they were just a few weeks away which you have confirmed. When we are here next time around we will definitely go by there.
