Miami And Taxis

Someone asked around a week ago if Taxis in Miami take Credit Cards.

While they do a few of us including myself recommended paying cash.

I am reminded of this because we are in Miami this week and we took taxis to and from South Beach today. While they all now have these fancy machines that sit on the headrest of the front seat the cab driver told us that his machine was not working so he could not have taken a credit card.

Those machines also have a small video monitor that plays advertising.

It can be annoying but you can shut it off which I did on the return drive. :)

To the best of my knowledge, it is not yet mandatory in Miami-Dade county for all taxis to accept credit cards. The tourist boards have long been arguing for a rule that all taxis picking up at MIA must have a working card machine, but the lobbyists for the taxi industry have much louder voices and deeper pockets.

In Broward county (FLL and Port Everglades) it is mandatory--and all but guaranteed you will be strongly resisted by the driver, as the owner/operator of the taxi requires the drivers to reimburse them out of their pockets for the transaction fees.

Well, as I said I do not recommend using a credit card in the taxi but the taxi we were in for the ride over to South Beach had the machine which worked. I did not use it. The one on the ride home had the machine and it was broken.

Again I don't recommend using a credit card in a taxi here or in other places and as I said in original post you can't count on them working.
