Explorer of the Seas

DH and I have booked a cruise on Explorer for 2/26. I have read some reports that sound as if the ship isn't in good shape. Can anyone give any feedback in that area? Also, is there any rhyme or reason as to which ship is going out of the new terminal. It seems that Freedom is still at the old terminal and Explorer at the new?

We were on Explorer for 9 days last month. Excellent crew and the ship was in fine shape. Food in the MDR was delivered hot and quick. Very disappointed that she is leaving the US.

The Explorer continues to experience propulsion problems. The center izod, I think that is what they called it, does not function. This has been going on for over a year now. It is scheduled to be fixed when it goes to drydock later this year. Other that that, she is a beautiful, but getting a little tired, lady.

We were on the Dec. 18th Explorer cruise. I thought she was in great shape. The Azipod issue was fixed earlier in December so you should have no propulsion problems. The Captain and crew were great. We had great service in the MDR for dinner and lunches. Enjoy your cruise!

Considering prior reviews I was pleasantly surprised in her shape. Cabins were a little worn but nothing other than cosmetic. Public rooms sparkled. We used the new terminal. I suppose they will keep Freedom at the old terminal so they can use the new one more often. I think we were the first to depart and then Enchantment used it twice before we got back.

Great to hear.

Did you by any chance post the compasses? We are leaving on the Feb. 26

We were on the Explorer Christmas Cruise, and first to utilize the new Pier 1 for debarkation. Explorer is still in excellent shape, and from what I could tell from debarking from the new Pier 1 at Cape Canaveral, it looks awesome!!!

Just wish they would have told us prior to sailing that we were disembarking at a different pier!!! RCI did a great job though getting everyone back to their vehicles as necessary.

And although EX hasn't gone through dry dock refurbs, it has the Freestyle Soda Machines in the Promenade and Windjammer...no Dr. Pepper withdrawals for my DD this time!!!

Totally agree with this.

OP- Heres my opinion on the Explorer. I'm very detail oriented and I was pleasantly surprised and thought it was a fantastic ship. I think the Exploer is maintained exceptionally well. I also think the reports of the ship being "worn and tired" are referring to the fact that some of the decor and finishes on the ship are slightly outdated (very late 90's / early 2000's) compared to the Freedom and Oasis class.

However, the ship is very clean and I would not classify it as "worn". The only area I found to be a bit worn and needing attention was our stateroom, which wasn't bad, it was just slightly worn and needed a little TLC. It was clean, just due for new carpeting and an updated TV ;).

We're booked on the Explorer in late May after it has come out of drydock, out of Southampton and doing the fjords. Looking forward to a refreshed ship and a great cruise.

Explorer needs to be put to rest.. or a MAJOR overall.. It is done!

That was helpful. I think it's the detail, background and objective stance you take that convinced me.

To the OP, while my time Explorer was a few months back, I found her to be in amazing shape and her crew to be very friendly and attentive. I cannot imagine that you will fail to be WOWed by your experience sailing Explorer.

Was also on Explorer last month and whole heartedly agree with this...except I am welcoming her to Southampton with open arms and looking forward to sailing on her again in May from home shores!!

Great crew on that ship, I envy you. Enjoy her while you can, she will be off to Australia before you know it.

Just got off this morning......was on for two weeks. She definitely needs a facelift......new carpet, drapes, upholstery....but still in great shape. My Time Dining was run very nicely......food was great. We had a couple of issues, but nothing major. Crew was great and I even won a little bit in the casino! Review is forth coming!

We were on Explore this past October. 95% of the public areas were in good shape. You will see most of the wear and tear in the cabins. However, when we went on the cruise we knew she was old and expected her to look old and over all ended up being pleasantly surprised. But you will see some stains and rust, but we still had a great time and miss her.

Just off Explorer of the Seas on 1/9/15. In the process of finishing up my pictorial trip report. Tons of pictures of the public areas of the ship as well as a Behind the Scenes All Access Tour if you would like to take a look.
