Travel Insurance for Domestic Cruise

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

My parents are going on this Tasmania cruise in 3 days! :)

I am only looking into travel insurance now, but was wondering what type of insurance you guys recommend? I've ruled out credit card insurance as I read the thread posted the other day and it seems that domestic travel is not included. I'm looking into TID and they say we should select Australian waters. How do I know if the cruise will stay in Australian waters?

Thank you in advance :p

i rang up 1Cover insurance and they quoted that you will have to get the insurance that covers NZ and Sth Pacific because there's no medicare onboard and its classed as an international ship

Thank you. Would you say 1cover is better than TID?

If TID are recommending an Australian Waters choice, that will be fine.

That cruise stays in domestic ports, but you have to check each itinerary to see whether that's the case.

if you do a dummy quote with 1Cover it seems to work out cheaper if you select NZ and South Pacific over Australian domestic

Be wary of a cheaper quote when selecting other areas, it may mean you are not covered at all and then it will be very expensive.:(

Hi,

We recently did 2 Diamond Princess domestic cruises and I was concerned that I would have to take out other travel insurance other than my Credit Card Insurance. I contact Allianz and they advised that as long as Medicare coverage was not on the ship, we would be covered. I then rang Princess and they advised that NOTHING on our particular cruises would be covered by Medicare, so our CC insurance was sufficient. I would advise contacting the cruise line and the provider before taking out insurance!

Hope this helps!

Be careful though if you are not covered where Medicare cover is available will you be covered if:

You need to be airlifted from sea to, say, Melbourne.

What coverage will you have if there is an accident in Hobart or Burnie or somewhere like that and then need transport home.

Also please make sure you have cover for the right region, insurance companies love to find a reason to deny cover when there is a claim.

Thanks everyone for your replies!

I ended up going with insureandgo as they have cruise specific policies and you can enter preexisting medical conditions without submitting documents.:p

Sounds perfect, make sure you disclose all conditions that are relevant many make no difference to the premium anyway.
