bunnypug Posted August 31, 2005 #1 Share Posted August 31, 2005 This just posted on local NO news channel website (WWLTV); I believe the AM time posted is a mistake. 12:55 A.M. - MIAMI (AP) -- Miami-based Carnival Cruise Lines says it is considering a federal request that the company use some of its cruise ships as emergency shelters or help in Hurricane Katrina relief efforts in some other way. Cruisegoer Posted August 31, 2005 #3 Share Posted August 31, 2005 I seriously don't think Carnival could get its ships up the mouth of river into NOLA based on the destruction I've seen...the river has got to be filled with brush and debris. LittleBit Posted August 31, 2005 #5 Share Posted August 31, 2005 If this is a request by FEMA that they help out, they probably already have a plan on how to get the ships closer or how ot get the people out to the ships

CruiseCentric Posted August 31, 2005 #7 Share Posted August 31, 2005 At the end of the day Carnival will donate money to help. I seriously doubt that using one of their ships will be seriously discussed at Carnival. They dont want to flat out deny FEMA, but that will be the final result. There are so many logistical nightmares when trying to move people on to ships and moving ships to people. The plan to use the Astrodome and to construct housing seems to be a more viable option. It will be months before people can return home.

Especially since there is NO LAND to erect tent cities the only option is ships or move them out of state.. I wish them the best in whatever they decide to do.. ConnecticutFlamingo Posted August 31, 2005 #9 Share Posted August 31, 2005 Here's another way to think of it. Chances are that they wouldn't bring the ship(s) near NO. But since they berth in Galveston, and people are being evactuated(sorry, wish we had spell check) to Houston, wouldn't it make sense to hold the ship(s) there? The ships can hold thousands of people, feed them and have sanitary facilities. Not saying that Carnival or the other cruise lines would commit one or any ship, but it is something to think about. I'm hoping that when our cruise comes in Oct, we leave out of a Florida port.
