EileenHill Posted February 19, 2015 #1 Share Posted February 19, 2015 Good day! we are booking a 6 night NCL Gem cruise that leaves out of New York and the first stop is Halifax, then St. John (New Brunswick) and then Portland, Maine. We will have a balcony room. Most cruises that I have taken have crossed bodies of water, so it doesn't matter what side of the ship you are on, you see nothing but water mostly! But since this cruise will be traveling along the outer edge of land, will you be able to see land from the ship at any point? Just curious if there is a "better" side of the ship to get a room on. I hope this doesn't seem like a silly question! :)
Nitemare Posted February 19, 2015 #2 Share Posted February 19, 2015 After Portland, do you go back to NYC? Basically you are sailing at night and too far from shore to see much of anything. Entering and leaving port you can watch from an upper deck where you'll have a full view of everything, anyway. But entering or leaving New York Harbor, one side is going to have a view of the Statue of Liberty and the other is going to have a view of Manhattan, assuming you sail from Manhattan, which I believe NCL does

Giantfan13 Posted February 20, 2015 #4 Share Posted February 20, 2015 We have sailed out of NY several times and the last poster is correct. Sailing out, the skyline will be on your left and the Statue of Liberty on your right. But besides that, you should be out, on an upper deck, for this. Don't stay in your room on your balcony. Sailing out of NY is amazing, going down the Hudson River, past the new Freedom Tower, by the Statue of Liberty and under the Verrazano Bridge. You really need to be up and out to experience it all. Loonbeam Posted March 20, 2015 #6 Share Posted March 20, 2015 BTW at sea, we were still far enough out it didn't make a difference. We were on princess, did notice that our port side cabin was dockside more often than not, in case you care to watch the running of the passengers... As noted, for NYC don't spend time in cabin at sailaway!
DaisyGoldberg Posted March 27, 2015 #7 Share Posted March 27, 2015 (edited) On the Dawn, we were starboard side and faced land when docked most of the time in the Boston-Quebec-Boston itinerary. Portland was a tender port. Edited March 27, 2015 by DaisyGoldberg
Synderela Posted May 14, 2015 #8 Share Posted May 14, 2015 Was PEI the only tender port on the Boston - Quebec cruise? We are going that one this fall and hoping it is the only tender port!
Shak Posted May 14, 2015 #9 Share Posted May 14, 2015 Not sure about the other cruise lines but on RCI the only tender port of call is in Bar Harbor. Shak

Rare mskaufman Posted May 14, 2015 #11 Share Posted May 14, 2015 Sailing out of NYC you will want to be on deck. For the rest of the cruise there will not be much to see that would make one side better than the other. For other ports, would also recommend being on deck.
