Saint Greg -

My BF and I are cruising out of NOLA on 8/22 as a joint birthday trip.

Twice in the past I have stayed at the Hilton Riverside, which is available through Hotwire for about $69.

Some of the recent reviews on Trip Advisor have been mediocre.

Is this still a good hotel to use?  I do like the ease of walking out of the hotel straight to the port.

I haven’t witnessed any differences and wouldn’t hesitate to book it. I’m staying there in September.

We'll be staying at Maison St. Charles in November. Will it be easy to get to the cruise port by street car or should we just take a taxi?

I think you’d have to use three streetcar lines to get there...and that’s assuming the construction is done by then. I would do an uber or lyft. Lyft is usually a couple dollars cheaper. I’ve run into some shady cab drivers. With uber or lyft you know you won’t get overcharged.

It sounds like you want to be in the French Quarter. I've stayed at Maison Dupoy and Hotel Provincial with no problems. I don't know if they're all like this or not but the room we had at Hotel Provincial had like a kitchen, living room, bedroom with it's own bathroom. Then stairs going to a loft bedroom that also had it's own bathroom.

Looking at hotwire the best deal in that area is actually the 3* with 95% recommendation. If you use hotwire make sure you put 2 adults, and 2 children in the search. That will ensure you get a room with two beds in the event it doesn't give you the bed choice option. Anyway...the 3* with 95% recommendation for $86 is actually the Sheraton Four Points on Bourbon Street. Great hotel and location if you don't mind the kids being so close to the action. The 4* with 85% recommendation is going to be the Wyndham French Quarter. This is going to be a block off of Bourbon and Canal...On Royal Street. Which turns into St. Charles on the other side of Canal. You could catch you St. Charles Streetcar there.

Looking at non-hotwire hotels. I'm going to look on Hotels.com and see what I see. Wydham is $152 on there. Holiday Inn Chateau Laymone. A nice French Quarter style hotel 1 block off of Bourbon Street is $180. Hotel Monteleone. Fabulous hotel and location...$214.

Saint Greg,

Would this data still be relatively current for a one night stay 8/10?  Cruising 8/11-8-18

2 adults/2 older teens.  Would like to be within walking distance of the action.

Would it be better to park car at hotel for night and then drop off at Fulton’s or drop off at Fulton’s on first day?

Thanks in advance!

Sorry I missed this one. The hot rate hotels can change day to day. Make sure you put 2 adults, 2 children when you search if you’re getting one room. If you leave it at two adults you may get stuck with a 1 bed room.

The Fulton thing is up to you. If you were staying in the warehouse district you would be really close to Fulton. In the French quarter you’re going to be like 8 blocks away. Or you could walk 2-3 blocks and take the street car for 1.25/per person per ride or $3 per person for an unlimited 1 day pass. Or take an Uber/lyft which would probably be $6-8 each way.

Most FQ hotels are going to be valet parking only and charge $30-40/night depending on the hotel. Fulton offers hotel parking for $20/night.

For my next cruise which is two weeks after yours, I booked two nights of hotel parking at Fulton and seven nights of cruise parking at Fulton.

I’m just going to take a backpack to the hotel, then return on embarkation morning to collect my suitcase and catch the shuttle to the port.

We are going on Valor Sept 28 and have Room at Prytania Park for 27th at $116 total and parking at Fulton for the cruise. Have not read all of this post. Saint Greg, would you recommend a different hotel?

I can't say anything bad about it. I've never stayed there. It has four stars on trip advisor and I believe it had positive reviews on this board from a couple of people. I've heard if you stay there two nights they let you park for free during the cruise.  If you're getting it for $116 total I think you have a good price for that night.

Saint Greg help!

So, we had a group of cruisers who were going to get an air b&b for mardi gras next year, but it recently fell through! Now they are booked at embassy suites by the convention centre. Have you ever seen it come up as a hit deal on hotwire? It seems like that's Warehouse district?

Argh, so frustrated!

I’ve had embassy on a hot rate. It’s not on there regularly though. Yes it’s in the warehouse district. I want to say it’s a 3.5 star. What are your dates?

February 22 to 26th. We have a vehicle, but can easily park at Fulton if we are semi close.

Embassy doesn’t have a hot rate right now. Doesn’t mean that won’t change. Right now you can book it straight up for $382/night.  What is on there is Hilton Garden Inn for $115/night. It’s just a couple blocks away...almost directly behind Fulton garage. I’m staying there in a few weeks and parking at Fulton. There’s a 4-star for hot rate for $290 which is Loews. That’s basically across the street from Harrahs. Based on the prices I’d probably jump on that Hilton Garden Inn. $115 Seems like a great price for those nights. It’s the lowest price in the city...by far.

4* $119 - Hilton Riverside

3.5* $137 - Doubletree

3* $260 - Bluegreen Vacations Club La Pension, Ascend Resort

They make it so easy now with the ones that have the trip advisor review numbers. The answer is just a little further down the page.

To update this I stayed at Hilton Riverside this past weekend. Overall we had a great stay. If I had complaints it would be long check-in/out lines and their in room checkout wasn’t working.  We checked in the day of the Saints-Cowboys SNF game and a day when Glory was in port so I’m sure that is related to the lines.

Another thing...Hilton has expensive parking. Their self parking ($44/day) is as or more expensive than valet parking at most New Orleans hotels. Depending on the hotel valet runs $30-40/day. I knew this going in. The part that made me mad is I’ve had it before where I checked out a little over 24 hours after I parked. They tacked on an additional $10 for that. This time I left about 10 mins over 24 hours only because of the long check-out line. I asked the front desk person if they could not charge me additional because of this. He said there was nothing he could do.

What I should’ve done when the In room check out didn’t work was just call and check out over the phone. I’ve been able to do that successfully at other hotels.

I’ll be keeping my eye out for additional parking charges. So far they haven’t charged me. I’ll post another update if they do.

Another note on Hilton riverside...if you are a smoker or just want quick access to an outside area where you can see the river. You can request building 3. Which has all of these courtyards. You can see building 3 from this picture. I’ll post some pics from the Mark Twain courtyard. The next courtyard over has a pool.
