maggie3 Posted March 15, 2015 #1 Share Posted March 15, 2015 I believe I read somewhere that the Venice city fathers were hoping to ban cruise ships from entering via the lagoon past San Marco. We had come in this way in the past. It was a dramatic entrance for viewing from the ship, but one is aware of the impact this must have on the city itself. Can someone on this board please report if such an entrance will be possible this year, or if the ship will be obliged to enter via a different route? Rare fabnfortysomething Posted March 15, 2015 #2 Share Posted March 15, 2015 there was a thread a while back about this there is no alternative route at present-work to dredge a new canal for access hasn't even started so for the foreseeable future cruise ships will continue to use the Guidecca canal which passes St Marks
CruiserBruce Posted March 15, 2015 #3 Share Posted March 15, 2015 A quick search finds several threads: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2151064&highlight=venice+ships+banned http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2149994&highlight=venice+ships+banned Summary: the ban was removed by Italian courts. For the foreseeable future.
maggie3 Posted March 15, 2015 Author #4 Share Posted March 15, 2015 Thank you for the information, fabnforty and Bruce. We did love our grand entrance into Venice, while at the same time realizing this cannot be good for the future of Venice. We were sure this would change and had prepared ourselves to expect an alternative route. It is sad for the community of Venice that its decision making and implementation are so slow.
