Greenville S,C-Atlanta-Amsterdam-Barcelona on Delta for HAL cruise

We are taking our first European cruise on HAL's Eurodam, traveling from

Greenville, SC to Barcelona, Spain to pick up the ship on Delta. We have layovers in Atlanta and Amsterdam, which are quite lengthy (a bit over 4 hours, which was the best price for first class.) Can we check our luggage straight through to Barcelona, or will be have to retrieve it somewhere and re-check it? Delta is giving me differing answers. Any help will be appreciated. We leave in a month!

Can I suggest you post this on a Flyer Forum. There are a couple of good ones. You will get much more reliable answers there. :)

I think you mean the Cruise Air board, here:

First, you won't be on Delta from Amsterdam to Barcelona, as Delta doesn't fly that route. You likely will be on KLM. You might even be on KLM from Atlanta to Amsterdam. This is important because you check in on the airline you are actually flying, not the one you booked thru.

Chances are very good your bags will go all the way thru to Barcelona. You will have to go thru a passport check in Amsterdam.

Layover length doesn't matter internationally - even up to 23 hours - as long as you aren't purposefully taking a day between flights. Your luggage will almost certainly be checked through all the way to Barcelona. Delta and KLM are Skyteam partners and will handoff the luggage seamlessly.

Double check when you check in, of course.

Assuming all is in 1 ticket, yes your luggage will go all the way through to Barcelona. Most likely you will get all boardingpasses at checkin at Greenville. However you will go through passportcontrol in Amsterdam. Indeed Ams-Barcelona will be a KLM flight.

On the way back more you will go through passportcontrol in Atlanta. Your luggage will be tagged to Greenville. You have to pick it up in Atlanta, once through customs you drop it at the transferdesk again.

This sounds like a difficult start to get to a cruise. Are you doing this through HAL? Have you checked if there is a direct flight from Atlanta to Barcelona? If there is, call HAL and see if you can change to that flight. It may cost something but well worth it.

Why is this a difficult start? Amsterdam is a relatively easy airport to transition through and being in business will give you access to the KLM lounge in which you can even take a nice shower if you so choose. I wouldn't pay the change fees to transition to a direct flight.

Layovers in Atlanta and Amsterdam are both 4 hrs.

Both airports are huge. A 4 hour layover sounds very good. You will have time to get from one terminal to another without rushing. In Amsterdam several years ago we only had a 2 hour layover and we literally had to run even though there were moving walkways.

Our trip was from Los Angeles to Amman, Jordan and we were able to check our bags all the way through. We were one one airline from Los Angeles to NYC, another airline from NYC to Amsterdam and on KLM from Amsterdam to Jordan.

The OP stated they booked it this way because it was the best price for first class. EM
