Ginjoli Posted April 29, 2015 #1 Share Posted April 29, 2015 Tried booking the Lisbon Tram excursion for June 3rd - Oriana Iberia itinerary at the weekend, but unfortunately already fully booked - one month prior to sailing. We (and also the three friends holidaying with us) have been wait-listed for this excursion, but wondered if anyone has had the same experience, and whether it is likely P&O will increase capacity to meet demand? I guess it will be down to the local agents whether additional transport available. Your comments would be welcome.
BigMac1953 Posted April 29, 2015 #2 Share Posted April 29, 2015 We did the organised tram ride a few years ago on a Cunard trip. It was the No 28 tram which leaves from the main square. Cunard had booked two exclusively. The only difference between the organised trip and one you just do yourself, is that the staff were dressed in traditional costumes and we got a cake and a small glass of port. This is a famous tram that attracts a lot of tourists and pick pockets. It meanders through the city on a circular route. Apparently it is quietest around midday. I would simply do it myself at a fraction of the P & O cost. Just don't take any valuables and be aware. Stewart
joeholiday2 Posted April 29, 2015 #3 Share Posted April 29, 2015 Walk to the St Apolonia train station, it's the sky blue building to the right of the cruise terminal. You will probably dock at the JTAB terminal so it's only a 10 minute walk. Go behind the ticket offices on the left and get a day travel pass from the newspaper kiosk, it's about €6.50. This gives you the freedom to use all the buses and trams, and the elevator Santa justa on the main street is free with this ticket as well. http://www.tomsportguides.com/portguides.html Have a look at the Lisbon guide. It gives some really good tips.
rfest Posted April 29, 2015 #4 Share Posted April 29, 2015 We did the Tram Tour ourselves a couple of years ago. You can purchase tickets from the stationary old tram in the Square in the centre of Lisbon. Go early. You can also ride on the public trams but they are very busy. Great experience. Thejuggler Posted April 29, 2015 #5 Share Posted April 29, 2015 We have used the tram, but we have also waited ages for a tram and not managed to get on. They aren't very regular so you need to find a stop near the end of a line and be patient. Be aware that if a tram is busy the driver will pick up locals over tourists. kevinyork Posted April 30, 2015 #6 Share Posted April 30, 2015 These guys offer two tram tours (scroll down). Probably a lot less expensive than P&Os. Weve used them before but not for this tour. https://www.yellowbustours.com/en/cities/lisbon/tours/ Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Ginjoli Posted May 2, 2015 Author #7 Share Posted May 2, 2015 Thanks so much for all your helpful and informative replies re the Lisbon Tram. Still hoping for a cancellation for P. & O's organised excursion, but shall look at alternatives if none forthcoming. Much appreciated.
annieuk Posted May 2, 2015 #8 Share Posted May 2, 2015 We did the Lisbon tram excursion in March. It was lovely, a very old tram,an excellent tour guide and a woman dressed in traditional costume who served us glasses of port (which were refilled!) and lovely Portuguese Custard Tarts. One thing we learnt about the public trams is that they are always full to bursting. When we drew up at various stops members of the public tried to board as they thought we were a regular tram and obviously only half full as no-one was standing! Looking at the public trams we could see people jammed together standing. I hope P&O put on another excursion for you - I think by memory there were at least two if not three trams on our trip. Wiz201 Posted May 2, 2015 #9 Share Posted May 2, 2015 not this particular excursion but we managed to get onto another excursion at Vigo as P&O managed to get another coach from the operators so it can happen.
