CruiserBruce Posted May 14, 2015 #2 Share Posted May 14, 2015 If you come over to the Italy board (as this doesn't really have anything to do with Thomson), here: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=595 you will see several threads with different options in Civi. AJ28 Posted May 15, 2015 #4 Share Posted May 15, 2015 We were docked in Civitavecchia on an Easter cruise this year and, like you, wanted to do something different. We got a local bus to the charming town of Tarquinia (google it); it is about half an hour drive away. You will buy your bus tickets in advance at a local shop at a cost of about 1.60 euro each way. When you get to the port entrance (only a ten minute walk from the ship), find the tourist information kiosk and ask (a) where the bus stop is (about five minute walk) and (b) nearest shop to buy a ticket. The day we went it was Monday and the Etruscan Museum was closed, it was also a local holiday so many other buildings were closed too. Additionally, many shops were closed 1-4pm. Despite this, it was very pleasant to wander around the town in the warm sunshine. Next time we are visiting Civitavecchia we plan to return (hopefully not a Monday) to revisit this lovely town. We hope to go again so would appreciate it if you could tell us where you bought the bus tickets Thanks
AJ28 Posted May 16, 2015 #6 Share Posted May 16, 2015 Well, there's a funny story about how we got tickets for the bus. We got directions to the bus stop from the Tourist Information kiosk but were not told about buying the tickets in advance. We found the bus stop easily and stood waiting (we had half an hour to wait). While waiting we started chatting to an Australian couple who were also visiting Tarquina. A couple of buses pulled up and people got on and we noticed that they didn't pay the driver but had little tickets. We asked another local standing nearby if we needed tickets and were told yes, we could get them from a shop but it was too complicated to explain where. At this time we had ten minutes until our bus arrived so my husband and the other husband went looking for a shop. In the past we have bought tickets from tobacconists near train or bus stations with no problem and we thought it would be easy to find one by the bus stop. No, it wasn't and both husbands had to run up and down the street before finding a shop which did sell tickets (not a tobacconist) . I have asked my husband the name and he can't remember but thinks it might be something like "travel world". Anyway both husbands returned with return tickets only to be told by us that the bus had just left. "Look, there it is" I pointed down the road. Then, thankfully it did a u-turn at the bottom and started coming back up the road on the other side. We all ran across and waved our arms and it stopped for us. Phew! Later, at Tarquinia, we met another family who had used the same bus service, but an earlier bus, to visit the down. She explained that she boarded not knowing about buying a ticket in advance and the driver just waved them on anyway. They bought their return tickets in Tarquinia. Husband is now just doing some googling to try and find out more information about where to buy bus tickets in Citi. However, he has come across some info on tripadvisor which suggests you can get tickets on the bus. Not so. (It is from 2011 though). It's not really helpful I know but hopefully a bit of research may help you to find out exactly where you can get tickets. Tarquinia is definitely worth a visit and we are looking forward to returning one day. Incidentally, you can get a taxi tour to Tarquinia for 100 euros, we saw people promoting this at the port gates.
cruising cegi Posted May 16, 2015 #7 Share Posted May 16, 2015 Thanks for reply. We did ask someone where to get the bus tickets from and they said from a "bar".(cannot remember the name) Like you we were running around like idiots.looking for this "bar" Perhaps its a new national sport in Italy sending foreigners on a wild goose chase!!! We were told previously not to board the bus without tickets so gave in:confused:
Red Scorpion Posted May 16, 2015 #8 Share Posted May 16, 2015 The bus seems to be very cheap but the tickets might be difficult to buy. Has anybody taken a taxi?
AJ28 Posted May 17, 2015 #9 Share Posted May 17, 2015 The bus seems to be very cheap but the tickets might be difficult to buy. Has anybody taken a taxi? Taxi drivers were charging 100 Euros for a 'Tarquinia Tour' on the day we were there, despite it being a Monday and museums closed on a monday, and a local holiday too. Three Euros return is better value. Perhaps a CCer can find and photograph a shop that sells these tickets and post it on CC :D
Doughty3 Posted September 12, 2015 #10 Share Posted September 12, 2015 A photo of the shop that sells tickets for the bus to Tarquinia would be so helpful. Maybe no one had time to stop to take a photo in the mad rush to find the shop and get to the bus stop in time!
