flatlander321 Posted August 28, 2015 #1 Share Posted August 28, 2015 We're doing an Alaska cruise next May and eating some good salmon sounds nice. Are the $50 salmon bake excursions (Juneau-Gold Creek or Skagway-Liarsville) better than the salmon served on the cruise ship (Carnival Legend)? Budget Queen Posted August 28, 2015 #2 Share Posted August 28, 2015 No comparison, first- Carnival has Atlantic salmon- that is massively bulk cooked. The salmon bakes have Alaskan salmon- which is a distinct noticeable difference.
Rare Keith1010 Posted August 28, 2015 #3 Share Posted August 28, 2015 Yes, the Salmon will be quite a bit better on land than on the ship. It will not be flash frozen. Keith
flatlander321 Posted August 28, 2015 Author #4 Share Posted August 28, 2015 Thanks for the info. I hope the weather is decent in either Juneau or Skagway so we can go to one of the salmon bake excursions.
jamiski Posted August 28, 2015 #5 Share Posted August 28, 2015 We're going to the salmon bake in Juneau next Monday rain or shine. From the reviews there appears to be large covered areas. But, hey if you don't get a little wet it wouldn't be the full Alaska experience ;) Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
donaldsc Posted August 28, 2015 #6 Share Posted August 28, 2015 The salmon on the ship will be from somewhere and will be frozen. The salmon at the salmon bake will be from Alaska but may have to be frozen as fresh caught salmon is seasonal. Do the salmon bake or just go to a good on-shore restaurant. snookcruiser Posted August 28, 2015 #7 Share Posted August 28, 2015 Thoroughly enjoyed the salmon bake in June at Liarsville after our train ride. It was cooked on an open flame pit. Best salmon I ever had. Tastes so much better than salmon from the grocery store.

The salmon served on the ship is not local nor is it fresh. It has been sitting in someone's freezer for a while. There is no comparison in the taste. Depending on when you are there the salmon bakes may be fresh local or frozen. In May it is probably frozen from the previous season. The salmon are not running that early in the year. bottom-dragger Posted August 29, 2015 #9 Share Posted August 29, 2015 . In May it is probably frozen from the previous season. carinainacar Posted August 29, 2015 #10 Share Posted August 29, 2015 The salmon bake in Juneau tastes much better than the salmon on the ship. You'll love the salmon bake! The corn bread that they serve there is extra delicious. Also try the salmon with the birch syrup, might not look good, but it definitely tastes very unique. :)
