cannockfrodo Posted August 9, 2016 #52 Share Posted August 9, 2016 It's in the region of £50, one of the most expensive we've been on. It does offer three different routes and gives free water. The currency is the dihram I think Sent from my iPad using Forums

When we search hotels what area should be looking at ? Are most things closed on Friday or Saturday ? Thanks If you are flying into Dubai, a central location would be the downtown area which is near Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall and Dubai Fountains. Try Towers Rotana. Great rate for the area in a nice hotel and right at a metro station which is one or two very short stops to BK and Dubai Mall & Dubai Fountains. There are plenty of places to get coffee in the morning so I looked at the standard room rate for a mid week in April. https://www.rotana.com/rotanahotelandresorts/unitedarabemirates/dubai/towersrotana This is not the beach area nor the creek area. If you stay along Sheik Zayed Road or Mohammed bin Rashid Blvd you will be in the heart of downtown. Let us know what you want to do and what the thrifty budget range is and we can make further suggestions:) Are you planning to take the bus to Abu Dhabi from Ibn Battuta Mall or the central bus station? The malls will be open regular hours on Friday. The traditional Bastakiya neighborhood and the souks will be closed on Fridays until later in the afternoon. Everything is open on Saturday regular hours. Edited September 6, 2016 by lilybob add info

This is a good place to visit as well to see the historic center of the city. It is also near the Sheik Mohammed Center for Cultural Understanding which I would recommend. http://www.cultures.ae/ Arabian Courtyard (Bur Dubai side of creek) http://www.arabiancourtyard.com/ Radisson Blu Dubai Creek (Deira side) https://www.radissonblu.com/en/hotel-dubaideiracreek You will most likely end up taking taxis from here to get to the downtown area but taxis are pretty thrifty in Dubai:D Even if you don't stay in the creek area, visit the Spice Souk on the Deira side of the creek. The Gold Souk is also on this side (for your wife!) And ride the small abras across the creek for one dirham ($.27) The supermarkets in Dubai are very modern and carry a lot of things you will find familiar. They will also carry a wide range of Indian spices and fruits/vegetables. You can check out Waitrose in Dubai Mall or Carrefour if you visit Mall of the Emirates. For Middle Eastern things I would go to the Lifco store on Sheik Zayed Road near the Financial Center metro station......not far from Rotana Towers or Dubai Mall. http://yp.theemiratesnetwork.com/biz/United_Arab_Emirates/Dubai/Lifco_Supermarket_29388.html

That is quite expensive, but worth considering, since we will be flying halfway around the world to get there;)
buchhalm Posted September 8, 2016 #59 Share Posted September 8, 2016 Yes the currency in the United Arab Emirates is the Durham (AED). I find the HoHo bus in Dubai (and Muscat, Oman). Too expensive and a rip off compared to the ones in Europe or USA. you are better off deciding on what you want to see and then take taxis in between the places in Dubai Also consider try excellent and dirt cheap new Dubai Metro. (Note that on Friday it only starts around noon!)
buchhalm Posted September 8, 2016 #60 Share Posted September 8, 2016 The DIRHAM, not the Durham. @#$! Auto correct. And why "Durham " anyway?

buchhalm Posted September 10, 2016 #62 Share Posted September 10, 2016 No. Same country. Same story. Nothing much happens or is open until at least early afternoon. Relax by the pool
