cole Posted September 21, 2015 #1 Share Posted September 21, 2015 OK you NYC experts. Our families will be flying into La Guardia and will overnight in order to board our cruise the next day (Manhattan Port). Having visited the city many times, we do not plan on doing any sight seeing after we arrive. Considering staying at one of the Marriott facilities at the airport and then booking transfers to the ship the next day. So.....is this a good plan? We figure that the hotels at the airport will be significantly less expensive than those in the city and one transfer the next day to the ship. Any comments on the plan? George C Posted September 21, 2015 #2 Share Posted September 21, 2015 I would rather be in Manhattan, so much to do , you could see a Broadway play or have a great dinner etc. Then short taxi ride to pier. But I am sure you will save money staying in Queens. I would at least price the midtown hotels.
138east Posted September 21, 2015 #3 Share Posted September 21, 2015 Could you provide more details? Exact dates? Number of people? Number of hotels rooms and people/room? How much are the port transfers per person? I'm assuming you would have to get everyone back to the airport for the transfers, so a car service to the port might end up being more convenient and more economical if you can split up your group. Cruisesfun65 Posted September 21, 2015 #4 Share Posted September 21, 2015 Personally we found LaGuardia hotels to be pretty expensive (and in shady neighborhoods). For the same amount of money you can stay at a Hampton Inn in Manhattan.
138east Posted September 21, 2015 #5 Share Posted September 21, 2015 I see you are having a family reunion on the Gem in Sep 2016. If no one wants to sightsee, why are you not considering having everyone fly into Newark Airport? There will be a much wider and nicer hotel selection and they could be priced much more reasonably than LGA. If your group is willing to use the airport bus, everyone can go round trip to Port Authority for $28/pp. You would have to split up to take cabs to the port. Yes, it is a family reunion - just adults (brothers and sisters and spouses) and seriously not interested in doing sightseeing. We will book a private transfer from the hotel to the pier, so we need to take into consideration the distance from the airport to the pier. From what I have read, LGA is nearer than the other airports (is this correct?). No bus rides for our group due to age of some travelers and lugging our luggage on and off is not an option. We prefer Marriott Hotels and will check into the difference between flights and hotel costs between the two. We are flying in from Missouri, Kansas, Texas, & Arkansas, so airline costs would vary. As you can see, there are a lot of factors to take into consideration - but we don't sail until 2016. Thanks for all of the input and suggestions. Everyone is a great help. Everyone is a great help.Cole Marriott has a huge selection of properties at EWR which we recommend all the time. Courtyard Elizabeth and Residence Inn are next to the Jersey Gardens Mall. Other properties like the main Marriott, the Renaissance, Springhill Suites, Fairfield Inn, and Courtyard Newark are in more isolated locations. Your Sep travel date is the absolute peak season in NYC. You didn't mention how many people. That location sounds like a great option, especially with the Mall close by. I will keep the number and check it out for transportation. Thanks so much for the information. It always helps when someone who knows the area helps.:D Cole
mjkacmom Posted September 21, 2015 #9 Share Posted September 21, 2015 If the folks from DE drive up the turnpike, if they have room, maybe they could pick some of you up. You can share the parking expense.
