mmwc Posted October 21, 2015 #1 Share Posted October 21, 2015 (edited) Midge and I are on the Royal for a 10-day Caribbean cruise in the spring. Each of us receives 250 minutes of Internet time as one of our Elite perks. We know that we are highly unlikely to use 500 Internet minutes in 10 days. Our question is this: Can we trade in one of our allotments of Internet minutes for onboard credit? Does anyone have any experience with this kind of request? Thanks, folks! JF - retired RRT Posted October 21, 2015 #4 Share Posted October 21, 2015 Someone posted on a thread (can't remember who/which) that they talked to a fellow passenger who had done just that. It would be nice...we just did a 4 day and didn't use 1/2 of our minutes.

I don't know about second hand information..."a guy told me." Call Princess and ask. In fact, call Princess and ask for the Captain's Circle person. The rep who answers the phone might tell you anything, correct or not. This is the first I've heard of the idea.
goofy559 Posted October 21, 2015 #8 Share Posted October 21, 2015 It was shogun who posted about it on his recent emerald thread. Said he heard from lots of elite folks they had traded in some perks for obc.

Shogun Posted October 21, 2015 #10 Share Posted October 21, 2015 Hi All Yip it was me, I had not heard about this, but as an elite member told me he had done so before boarding the ship, no reason why he should be lying, now knowing how Princess works this might of be a mistake and this guy was just lucky, would be good to get a Princess response, the other thing I came across this time this comes direct from me was the deluxe breakfast in the Crown grill which was on a card left in my inside cabin basically the ultimate balcony breakfast for those in an inside. yours Shogun
shredie Posted October 21, 2015 #11 Share Posted October 21, 2015 (edited) So it was one guy and not "lots of elite folks"? It's possible that the one guy was confused, not lying. I'm not going to get my hopes up until I get official confirmation that this is possible. Edited October 21, 2015 by shredie
Nezmo Posted October 21, 2015 #12 Share Posted October 21, 2015 I guess it's not much different from those folks who said they got extra chairs on their balcony when others were told no. Your mileage may vary. Do you think any general statement from Princess is that reliable given the contradicting information we hear day in day out. I got OBC for a 'new bookings only' offer on my existing booking. I am sure another person may not be as lucky and the next may do better than I did. Moral? Simply call and ask Princess if they can do it for you in your specific case. It'll be a simple yes or no. At least we have a good idea they have done it before. Rare cruisequeen4ever Posted October 21, 2015 #13 Share Posted October 21, 2015 I'm wondering if the pax who traded out his minutes had booked under a promo that included some free internet time. Maybe his TA gifted him with some?
San Diego Ellie Posted October 21, 2015 #14 Share Posted October 21, 2015 I would love to trade in our elite bar set up for onboard credit. We have sometimes done it for the two coffee cards, but onboard credit would be so much nicer.
pms4104 Posted October 21, 2015 #15 Share Posted October 21, 2015 I wonder ... if enough elites wanted to trade out any or all of their perks for OBC (which one could cash out in the casino), might this give Princess cause to dilute the elite benefits? Well, and how to determine the value of internet, laundry, etc.? I see the mini-bar tradeout as logical, as not everyone drinks. But how far should Princess carry this? OCruisers Posted October 21, 2015 #16 Share Posted October 21, 2015 I would love to trade in our elite bar set up for onboard credit. We have sometimes done it for the two coffee cards, but onboard credit would be so much nicer. That would be nice. We both buy the All Inclusive Drink Sticker so the elite bar set up is of no real use to us. We never use any of our internet minutes either. Red Hat Cruise Cat Posted October 22, 2015 #17 Share Posted October 22, 2015 I can't wait to trade in Free Laundry for OBC:D:D:D I could use the extra $1000 OBC to buy casino credits and then cash them out for cash:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Princess has offered the AIBP with some promotions and that could be traded in (before the cruise, not while on it) for some OBC. The OBC was far below what the cost of the AIBP would have been. It is possible that the passenger in that post had really traded in the AIBP booking amenity and mis-spoke by saying it was the Elite Internet benefit. No Elite benefit can be traded in for OBC. shredie Posted October 22, 2015 #19 Share Posted October 22, 2015 This is an example of how rumors get going. It's just like that game of telephone we used to play as kids. "A guy said" turns into great expectations for some people. I'm not hoping to turn in my minutes on my cruise next month in exchange for big OBC bucks. Corfe Mixture Posted October 22, 2015 #20 Share Posted October 22, 2015 It was shogun who posted about it on his recent emerald thread. Said he heard from lots of elite folks they had traded in some perks for obc. Seems to me that if they did this they would be opening a real can of worms. I can imagine all the Elites in suites queuing up to ask if they can have additional OBC for giving up their Elite entitlement to: a) free laundry which also has a clear monetary value and possibly b) priority tendering c) upgraded bathrobe etc all on the basis that they have paid for these benefit as suite passengers.
