wwcruisers Posted December 9, 2015 #26 Share Posted December 9, 2015 When McDonalds banned smoking many people said they'd go bankrupt.... Rememberer when you could smoke on planes, libraries, stores and busses and YES even all hotel chains.... The world has changed  And, for the better, I think. ;) But, keep in mind that X is more like a hotel chain. Smokers can stay there, but they have to step outside to have a "poof". And, even then, they are limited to a few specific areas. Not a problem for me, as I can easily avoid that particular outside bar, or that side of the pool deck.
gimletgal Posted December 9, 2015 #27 Share Posted December 9, 2015 ..... I don't smoke, but I, personally, would not want to sail with a ship full of rabid anti-smokers. If they're that uptight about stamping out the 3 or 4 smoking areas out of the thousands of square feet on a boat, I can only imagine what their attitudes about a myriad of other things would be. They're the very definition of control freaks. No thanks! Thank you for posting this. Unfortunately, for some, "it's all about me"! That is the way of today's world. ediemarie Posted December 9, 2015 #28 Share Posted December 9, 2015 i try to not over react to these things but it really gets to me sometimes. IF THE SMOKE BOTHERS YOU.... HERE'S A THOUGHT.... AVOID THE SMOKING AREA! I've been on elevators with men/women before that must have bathed in aftershave/cologne. this doesn't make it polite to wave my hand in front of my face or cough or any such reaction. for some reason people seem to think that these behaviors are ok when dealing with a smoker. if I am in a smoking area and someone walks through holding their nose or making snide comments I'm likely to do nothing. oh but if you could read my mind! ok, sorry about that but for goodness sake, avoid the smoking area. CanadianDee Posted December 9, 2015 #29 Share Posted December 9, 2015 I'm also a non-smoker - never smoked - and my husband is a former smoker. On our last cruise, he was bothered by the smoke far more than I was. :) As others have noted, the world and its attitude towards smoking has changed a great deal in the past few decades. I know many people who struggled with quitting. It's not easy. I don't begrudge the smokers their few smoking areas. Pretty simple for me to avoid and certainly not enough for me to complain about. While a smoke-free cruise wouldn't impact me, I see no reason to bar smokers from cruises by eliminating all smoking spots.
oneputt18 Posted December 10, 2015 #30 Share Posted December 10, 2015 Which lines are fully non smoking? Just did a search for smoke free cruise ships and there wasn't any listed. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Tapatalk

Tyler80 Posted December 16, 2015 #32 Share Posted December 16, 2015 Celebrity is mostly non-smoking now, but I could see it going smoke free in the future. Like the OP said, smoking isn't modern or luxurious. And not to mention it's a public health hazard here in the US. I did really enjoy the mostly smoke free environment on my recent cruise on Celebrity Silhouette. I will continue to sail Celebrity because of their smoking standards. Rare Host Jazzbeau Posted December 16, 2015 #33 Share Posted December 16, 2015 (edited) I wouldn't be surprised to find some cruise line trying to go 100% smoke-free, because that is the trend in society. Arguments based on the old Renaissance cruise line are not relevant, IMHO -- Renaissance was going very well with their 100% smoke-free policy and their no-travel-agent policy until 9/11 killed the travel business. It was their lack of a corporate sponsor with deep pockets, and the financing burden of all their new ships, that sunk them. But unfortunately, with their new scattershot marketing policy that wants to be all things to all people, I doubt that Celebrity is going to be the trendsetter on the next round of non-smoking as they were in the past. WpgCruise Posted December 16, 2015 #34 Share Posted December 16, 2015 (edited) I wonder what has caused so many to become so polarized that the concept of compromise is just not possible. I'm just speculating but I estimate about 97% of all Celebrity ships are non smoking. No indoor smoking, no balcony smoking, and very few designated outdoor smoking areas. The smoking areas are so few that if by chance I wander into or through one it's an anomaly rather than the norm. Why can't we accept that some will smoke and have a few designated areas for those who do ? Do we really have to have it all our way all the time ? SeaWatch12 Posted December 16, 2015 #36 Share Posted December 16, 2015 As a staunch anti-smoking advocate, I have no problem with Celebrity's policy of very limited smoking areas on their ships. I just do my best to avoid them. As long as a ship does not allow passengers/crew to smoke in any covered area, I'll sail. Now Holland America-wow that is another story. I have been wanting to try them but they still allow smoking on balconies and in the casino! You should see their smoking thread!!! I check it waiting for the day they announce a comparable smoking policy as Celebrity.
Iamcruzin Posted December 17, 2015 #37 Share Posted December 17, 2015 (edited) ...is to go no-smoking. I'm serious. Smoking isn't modern, nor is it luxurious. The argument that non-smoking ships failed is not relevant, times have changed (rapidly). If Celebrity is serious about attracting new clientele, as well as keeping repeat customers happy, moving the line to non-smoking is something that can't come soon enough. Will there be smokers that take their business elsewhere? Of course. Will the loss of that business be more than offset by new bookings that are done specifically because Celebrity has made the bold move to cater to the majority? Absolutely. The only place I ever smell smoke is when I pay for a vacation. That makes no sense. Celebrity... time to make a bold business decision. You can lead, follow, or get out of the way. Be a leader. I'm not and never have been a smoker. With that said I'm fine with the way things are now. As for it being modern or luxurious well vaping seems to be the new oral gratification. My son vapes and works in a vape store. I find it more offensive than cigarette smoke. The different flavors smell nauseating. I never complained about anyone smoking but the vapor makes me lose my mind even if I'm outside while he is vaping . The exhale is wet and it stinks Edited December 17, 2015 by Iamcruzin
Iamcruzin Posted December 17, 2015 #38 Share Posted December 17, 2015 I'm also a non-smoker - never smoked - and my husband is a former smoker. On our last cruise, he was bothered by the smoke far more than I was. :) I'm not saying that your husband does this but I find that former smokers are worst when it comes to complaining and preaching about present smokers. I wouldn't be surprised if former smokers are the ones starting these threads.
Bo1953 Posted December 17, 2015 #39 Share Posted December 17, 2015 But all of the places where smoking has been banned are for a few hours at most--not days or weeks. No thanks! Maybe what I do inside my cabin is next, that is, beyond smoking and using prohibited items... Or even dictate my clothing options during the cruise? What about banning certain nationalities on-board which was suggested in another thread? bon voyage...
