clm1982 Posted January 6, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 6, 2016 Hi All, I have a group of 15 people inc 5 children whom I need to get from port to Dunedin. What would be the most cost effective. Does anyone know how much the shuttle buses are? Should I hire a minibus/taxi to transport us to and from? Also, looking at doing Otego museum, Cadbury factory and Baldwin street at this stage maybe brewery and railway station if we get time. Are these all within walking distance? Thanks! Rare OzKiwiJJ Posted January 6, 2016 #2 Share Posted January 6, 2016 (edited) I think the shuttle buses were $25pp. Baldwin St is not in the main city, it is in North East Valley and would take an hour to walk to from the centre of the city (The Octagon). Google maps are very useful for checking the proximity of various places, and it will calculate the approximate walking or driving time between them. goodycruising Posted January 6, 2016 #3 Share Posted January 6, 2016 (edited) Don't forget that the shuttle will be a return trip, so when working out an alternative keep that in mind. Also some of your party might not want to stay in town the whole time, or may want to stay longer than others? Maybe not, but with the shuttle people can come and go as they please as it is running all day both ways. clm1982 Posted January 6, 2016 Author #4 Share Posted January 6, 2016 (edited) is the $25pp for kids too? I have a 3year old which would likely sit on my lap is that doable? How much would a taxi be? Edited January 6, 2016 by clm1982
trabeler Posted January 6, 2016 #5 Share Posted January 6, 2016 You didn't mention what cruise line you're sailing on, but for your info, Princess had arranged a shuttle that was $15 pp for a return trip or $10 for one way.
bonsai3s Posted January 6, 2016 #6 Share Posted January 6, 2016 Royal Caribbean had shuttles for $15 round trip. The Otagon museum, the Cadbury factory, and railway station are all within walking distance. We were in Dunedin a couple of days ago and the Cadbury Factory was extremely popular...with passengers and crew coming back with bags and bags of chocolates.:)

Aus Traveller Posted January 6, 2016 #8 Share Posted January 6, 2016 Another alternative is to hire two people-mover size vans and have the hire company come to the port gates. Check out Pegasus Hire Car Company.:)

As far as I could tell the shuttles were operated independantly of the cruise line - we were on Celebrity. You could buy tickets onboard in advance, or onshore. It's not a short trip, it takes about 20 minutes to get into the city. We actually didn't use the shuttle as my brother picked us up from the port. bigdavefc Posted January 6, 2016 #10 Share Posted January 6, 2016 We can highly recommend the Otago Museum (In particular the Tropical forest and the butterflies). Well worth a visit and excellent value
highflier01 Posted January 6, 2016 #11 Share Posted January 6, 2016 We have used the local buses a few times. http://www.orc.govt.nz/Information-and-Services/Buses/13-Port-Chalmers-to-City/
Kiwi Kruzer Posted January 6, 2016 #12 Share Posted January 6, 2016 We have used the local buses a few times.http://www.orc.govt.nz/Information-and-Services/Buses/13-Port-Chalmers-to-City/ Kiwi seniors on the cruise can travel free on the local bus by using their Gold Card.:) However be warned.......you can wait , wait and wait for the bus, and only one bus will turn up meaning passengers can be be left behind. It's also a long circuitous route into the City. ...great if you have all day and want a good look around. Far better to walk off the ship and straight onto the shuttle. I note that you had family meet you in Port Chalmers. What is a good place to arrange family to meet with us please as we have never been to this port. Thank you. Rare OzKiwiJJ Posted January 20, 2016 #14 Share Posted January 20, 2016 There is a library on the corner of Beach & George Sts, across the road from the exit from the port, which is a good place to meet people. There seemed to be plenty of parking in Beach St - at least at 10:30am when my brother picked us up.
