Breakaway - cold weather impact enjoyment

Hi there,

We're considering sailing on the Breakaway out of NYC in March. I'm concerned about the weather. The itinerary really doesn't excite us. We'd choose this cruise more due to ease of getting there and to enjoy the ship. My concern is that 2 of the sea days are the first and last day...which means North-East US weather (cold). How severely will this impact what we can do onboard. Obviously my kids (5 of them ranging from 8-19) won't be doing waterslides in 40 degree weather. What abou the other things - the ropes course, plank, mini-golf, etc. Is there enough to do that won't be impacted by cold temps?

Also...for anyone that has stopped at Port Canaveral as a cruise stop... Did you go to Disney/Universal? Was it worth it for the amount of time you get?

Thanks...

Jess

We did the BA a couple years back mid-March. As most folks say it will be about 1.5 days in at the beginning and end where it wasn't too warm. The last day it actually rained so that was a factor. I don't recall about the other venues and when they were open. I can probably look at my old Dailies and tell you.

As far as Disney, most people will say no, it is a waste as there isn't enough time. They also moved the arrival time later than when we went. A good option may be KSC and the ship's excursion actually gives you some time after they normally close apparently or you can always do on your own.

One other thing, when we went we knew going in the stops were not really of interest to us and we only planned to get off at GSC but we ended up missing that port due to it being too rough just so you are aware that could happen.

A couple of years ago I did a RCI cruise in January from Baltimore. We stopped in Port Canaveral and did the trip (by bus) to Epcot. Personally I didn't think it was worth it. I used to live in South Florida, so I have been to all the Disney parks dozens of times and absolutely love everything Disney. However, it's more than an hour drive each way to get to Orlando. Then simply the expense was crazy. Just to walk in the park was over $100 each. We had lunch in one of the Epcot countries, so that was another $20-30. We only had time for a couple of attractions - the lines were too long for most of the popular attractions, so we simply skipped those.

We went in January so even in Florida it was cold. The only nice day was the day we spent in Orlando, in the low 80's. Our final stop was Key West. Lots of fun but it was cold and rainy.

I did a 10 day out of NYC on RC Quantum last Feb. Abnormally cold weather that week (~10 F, windy). Sailed ~ 4pm -- that afternoon and night were fairly impossibly to be outside, very cold. Next AM was much better, though wouldn't be swimming. Next day and onwards was plenty warm. It's exactly what we expected.

Just know that the first night will be cold. It's fine. Potentially the last afternoon before you arrive in NYC might also be questionable for swimming.. but no big deal.

I have cruised in April out of NYC and nothing was impacted due to weather. Most people do mini golf, rock climbing. If there is sun, people are out. Yes there are people in the hot tubs on day 1. I have swam on day 2 and on the next to last day been in shorts. The weather on the cruise has been dependent on NYC weather-Some years I have worn a hoodie on and some years I have to wear a coat onto the ship.

I did Kennedy Space Center last April. It was worth it, but even that excursion seemed rushed. I had obc, otherwise would not have done this excursion. I can not imagine doing anything in the Orlando area. Go to these places when you have time to go to them. My daughter loves cocoa beach, so that is what we do in Port Canaveral, except last April.

I don't know if the ropes course is a great idea in windy cold either but there are things to do inside. The kid and teen clubs will have activities and there is an arcade.

To go with kids, I don't think the expense of the Disney excursion is worth it. I did Universal a few years back and that worked out well as it was just my mother & I and we really only wanted to see Harry Potter. We went right to the Harry Potter section, did all the things there & then were able to see the rest of one of the parks but we weren't going on roller coasters and we had I think 2 extra hours than what they are doing now.

I'm going on Breakaway solo in February and am going to do the Transfer only to Disney so I can get to Downtown Disney/Disney Springs and do some shopping.
