JonSch7 Posted January 25, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 25, 2016 Just got off the Fascination this morning in Jacksonville. Disembarkation was delayed two hours or so due to a "medical emergency". A medical emergency announcement was made at 6:00am or so, but nothing further. Several crew members confirmed that a passenger had died but wouldn't speak of the specifics. WLHyatt Posted January 25, 2016 #4 Share Posted January 25, 2016 Happens every week. Processes and systems are in place to deal with these occurrences, and respect should be given to the family.

The amount of law enforcement aboard the ship made it seem like a little more than a natural death. As far as deaths happening on a weekly basis, I don't exactly agree to that either. TruckerDave Posted January 25, 2016 #9 Share Posted January 25, 2016 (edited) As far as deaths happening on a weekly basis, I don't exactly agree to that either. Maybe not on this specific ship....but...when you start to count ALL the ships that sail each week (from just FL alone) then the numbers might lead to it being true. Rare bluejay555 Posted January 26, 2016 #11 Share Posted January 26, 2016 It's human nature to be concerned and want specifics when people get injured or sick, or even die. We all sort of relate to one another on some level, even strangers. (well most of us do, anyway!) There's nothing wrong with that. :)
smyliecruising Posted January 26, 2016 #12 Share Posted January 26, 2016 We had a death on our ship too. Everyone was curious what happened and who it happened to. I understand your concern because it's awful and you have vacationed with them all week! Don't know why people thought you meant anything other than curiosity and concern[emoji849]
timdeb7581 Posted January 26, 2016 #13 Share Posted January 26, 2016 Wow, Smyliecruising, we need people like you on Cruise Critic that can take a post with a grain of salt. JonSch7 thanks for your post there wasn't anything wrong with what you posted or the way you posted it. I live in Atlanta and it was on the news. Death is a fact of life and I am sure it happens regularly on cruise ships.
hockeyluver Posted January 26, 2016 #14 Share Posted January 26, 2016 My sympathies to the family. This is also a good example of why you should NOT book an early flight home! Debarkation can be delayed for any number of reasons.

Glock19 Posted January 26, 2016 #17 Share Posted January 26, 2016 It does happen a lot. Last year on the 15 day Hawaii cruise two passenger died on the Miracle. I only knew because my dad had a heart attack and I was down in the infirmary with him. The ships doctor told me he worries more about men in there 50s. They sit behind a desk all year, go on a cruise and are up and around doing stuff that they don't normally do and they get heart attacks. He see's it a lot. karinad Posted January 26, 2016 #18 Share Posted January 26, 2016 I would want to know why my ship was delayed for 2 hours. I would think that the cruise line should give some sort of explanation to those being delayed whether they're on board or waiting to board. JMO;)

They even sort each article into New, Popular or Old news in case the reader is in a hurry and can't decide which one to read.

Carnival staff was stellar with the comfort and care provided to my SIL including letting her mom and SIL join the cruise at the first port of call and accommodating them all in a new cabin until they could arrive back in Galveston. They were allowed to debark first, escorted by Carnival staff and we were allowed to wait in a private waiting area to meet them as they left the ship. This process does take some time because the Coroner has to take delivery of the body. We were grateful the ship went out of Galveston and it only took 9 days for the Galveston county coroner to release the body. If they had left from or any other larger port we were told it could have taken longer than 6 weeks.

Disembarking was delayed so that the medical examiner could do there thing, and that the family could be allowed off first. I do wish the ship would have made an announcement that disembarking would be delayed due to unforeseen circumstances. Instead nothing was mentioned, and everyone was left hanging out and spreading rumors about what had happened.
1katty1 Posted January 30, 2016 #22 Share Posted January 30, 2016 it is a fairly common experience we were on a cruise when on the first day at sea we went to the pool and it was closed a man went from the hot tub to the pool and died they tried to bring him back right there at the pool with everyone around but sadly he did not survive
