NVYN Posted May 1, 2016 #126 Share Posted May 1, 2016 Our ship will dock at Frihamnen port two days: June 25 and 26. We would like to go to the Festival but don't know exactly where. Could you please advise us. Thanks.
Desdichado62 Posted May 1, 2016 Author #127 Share Posted May 1, 2016 (edited) Do you mean the midsummer festivals? There will be celebrations on Saturday at Skansen. Bus #76 from frihamnen to Djurgårdsbron from where you should go with tram #7 towards Waldemarsudde, get off at Skansen. However bus #76 doesn't start running until 9am. Earlier then 9 is possible but a bit more complicated. Time tables for end of June and onwards is not available yet but you can use this in the meantime, it should be roughly the same http://sl.se/#/Travel/SearchTravelById/Frihamnen%20(Stockholm)/Skansen%20(Stockholm)/1170/1405/2016-05-28%252008_00/depart/sv/null/null/2,8,1,4,96,/null/null/null/null/null/false/null/0/0/null/false Edited May 1, 2016 by Desdichado62
stefanny28 Posted May 1, 2016 #128 Share Posted May 1, 2016 (edited) Dear Desdichado and Ultima Thule; Now that my cruise is coming soon, end of July, I have some more specific questions that I hope you can help me with. You have been very helpful with all my previous questions regarding public transport ( buses and T-bana). We are arriving Saturday morning at ARN, terminal 2 with Air France. We are 2 adults and a 17 y. I will follow your previous advices and get the Arlanda Express ticket ( the special: 2 for 300SEK) and since our hotel is the Comfort Stockholm, it should be a straight forward ride. We are staying from Saturday mid-day until Monday 4:00PM ( that's when the ship leaves from Frihamnen). We plan to get the visitor 72 hours SL card. Here are my questions: 1/ Do we need 3 cards? Does the 17 years old considered a child or an adult? I know she doesn't have to pay for the Arlanda Express but what about regular bus, tram and T-bana? 2/ Do we buy the SL cards in Arlanda airport or do we wait to buy it at T-Centralen? 3/ Should we buy the SL card at the airport and pay the extra fee for the Arlanda Express? Will this be more beneficial? 4/ The visitor SL 72 hours card is 230 SEK and 140 SEK for reduced. Whio can pay the reduced? Can a 17 years old pay the reduced fare? Thanks for helping me plan. Desdichado62 Posted May 2, 2016 Author #129 Share Posted May 2, 2016 1. Yes 2. Does not matter. The 72 hours will count from the time when you first used it and not time of purchase 3. It your choice, it will be cheaper but the commuter trains have very limited space around the seats and no extra space for luggage. It will also take about 20 minutes longer than Arl. ex. 4. Reduced price is for people who are 6-19 years old. Children who are younger than 6 will travel for free if accompanied by an adult.
Desdichado62 Posted May 2, 2016 Author #130 Share Posted May 2, 2016 (edited) Another thing worth mentioning is that there will high school graduations taking place all over Stockholm between June 2nd and June 10th. http://www.stockholm.se/-/Nyheter/Gymnasieskola/Utspringstider-for-vara-skolor2/ This will be in the shape of traditional "utspring" followed by students being transported around the inner city on either flat bed trucks or other kinds of vehicles. This might cause some traffic disturbances although there are some streets on which the student trucks are not allowed. Flat bed trucks with one or several "classes" on each is the most common vehicle nowadays. When I graduated in the late '90s individual transport were still the most common. https://www.google.se/search?q=studentexamen+utspring&safe=off&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjd5KzUz7vMAhXGWCwKHWG1CDgQ_AUICCgC&biw=1920&bih=830 https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=studentkortege https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Student_cap#Sweden https://somethingswedish.wordpress.com/2012/06/11/the-whole-town-celebrates-graduation-day/ http://www.thelocal.se/20070607/7532 Edited May 2, 2016 by Desdichado62
NVYN Posted May 2, 2016 #131 Share Posted May 2, 2016 Thank you for that information. I visited the Skansen web site and looks like the Midsummer Eve will be scheduled on June 24 but our ship will dock at Frihammen two days June 25-26 so we would miss that event! Is there another place that we could go besides Skansen Air Museum to experience Sweden's Midsummer Festival atmosphere?

Midsummer's eve is the "main day" of the Midsummer celebrations and it is always on a Friday since Midsummer's day is always on the Saturday between June 19th and June 25th. However at Skansen you can celebrate midsummer during all three days (according to the Swedish version of their website). So Skansen is probably you only chance to experience a Swedish midsummer. SellaVee Posted May 2, 2016 #134 Share Posted May 2, 2016 We will be disembarking the morning we arrive in Stockholm in August, so we plan to stay on in the city for a night or two. The ship docks at Vartahamnen and eventually we will be flying back to the UK from the airport. What would be the most convenient area to book a hotel in in Stockholm? We'd like to see the usual tourist sights and also take in the atmosphere in Stockholm. First thing in the morning we will have our wheeled luggage with us but hope to drop that off at the hotel and continue on foot/public transport. On our last day we hope to take a late afternoon flight. Many thanks for your help so far. This is a wonderful resource.

I forgot to say that reduced price is also for those who are older then 65 and in both cases you have to be able to verify age in request.

The main sights in Stockholm+the shopping areas are a bit spread out, so there aren't really one specific are but in general, Norrmalm, Östermalm, Södermalm and Old Town. Decide what you want to do and then look for hotels within (for you) a reasonable distance.

I was thinking we will need at least 2 hours in each Museums. It depends mostly on yourselves and how thorough you want to be. Vasa could easily slip into 2,5-3-3,5 hours if you aren't careful. ;) I don't know about Abba, I haven't been there myself yet so I have no experience from it. dee66 Posted May 10, 2016 #144 Share Posted May 10, 2016 Hi Desdichado62, Thank you for all the wonderful links and information. It is greatly appreciated. I will be arriving on Regal Princess cruise ship in Stockholm on 7/15/2016. We are a party of four. Unfortunately are ship is only in port from 7:00 AM to 2:00 pm. I would like to see the following: Vasa Museum ABBA museum Royal Palace area from outside for pictures Gamla Stan walking tour None of the tours that I have found will include all of these sites. What would you recommend? If I would do it by myself, then in what order and how to get from one to another? I am OK with paying for taxis if it helps me see all the sites. I have inquired about private tours, but they are all quoting prices from $1100-1300 for a party of four people. Also, where would you recommend we do some very quick shopping. Thank you in advance for all your help

I think Abba and shopping might be difficult to find time for. What would be the best way and how much time to get from Vasa to ABBA? 2. Is there a way to get tickets for the 8:30 am opening at VASA? 3. How long does the HOHO bus take to get to VASA? Would a taxi or other form of transport be faster to beat the lines at VASA?

Normally a taxi would be fastest BUT there is construction going on at Slussen so both taxis and buses are at risk of getting stuck in rush hour traffic 10 min walk from Vasa to Abba. 2. Not that I know of but there are some sort of ticket machines at Vasa which you can use to avoid the cues to the manned ticket booths. 3. I don't know, longer time then taxis and HoHo boats presumably. You can also use http://ressel.se/sv/tidtabell-cityline/ to get to Vasa in the morning. They only accept credit card though (tickets are bought onboard). To speed up vasa visit, you can download this free aduio guide if you have a smartphone or mp3-player. http://www.vasamuseet.se/en/visit/audioguide Edited May 10, 2016 by Desdichado62
