Stockholm 2016 information and advise

Thanks for all the helpful information.

Can you speak to using the ride-sharing app Uber in Stockholm? Are cars readily available? I'm thinking of using Uber instead of the transit system for a couple of evening activities.

Thanks!

I know what they are but I have never used them.

From a personal preference they are not something I would use since I do not wish to encourage illegal taxi operations.

They are not an authorized taxi company and according to DN newspaper, so far at least 21 of their drivers have been convicted for Svarttaxi ("black market taxi").

http://www.dn.se/nyheter/sverige/uber-tjanar-pengar-forare-far-ta-smallen/

The Swedish taxi market is unregulated but any taxi driver still needs to have a valid taxi driver license and a commercial driver permit (yrkestrafiktillstånd) to be able to do commercial taxi operations.

In addition to that, the tax department are also doing investigations and in their cases there are drivers who have not specified incomes,

from their taxi driving, on their income declarations. Some of them even was receiving unemployment benefit funding.

Also have in mind that in case of an accident or crash or etc, the drivers (and you) are not insured.

Thank you for that feedback. I read the article and it sounds like it could have been written here in Texas as the same issues are being discussed now.

It might be a translation issue, but I think this only refers to Uberpop, which is a low-cost service that Uber has provided in some places, sort of like "I'm headed that way so I'll pick you up." They have since suspended this particular service. I don't think this refers to services like UberX and UberBlack. Those drivers have to have proper licenses and insurance and should be fine in Stockholm and other cities in Europe.

Help!

We arrive by ship at 9:50AM and fly at 4:10PM. Is it feasible to do some touring before we head to the airport? Or is that just cutting things too close?

That is about 6 between ETA and departure so I think you should be able to squeeze in a mini mini touring of maybe 2-3 hours or so.

It would probably be wise to pre-book/order a taxi in advance so that it is waiting for you when the ship arrives.

If you need to put your suitcases somewhere there are large storage boxes/storage facilities at the central station.

can anyone help, I will be arriving on the Regal Princess on 17th August, but we don't port in Stockholm we port in nynashamn, has anyone else done this before?

Thanks Sarah

I think many have done it before since this is the third summer with Royal or Regal Princess coming to Nynäshamn and Stockholm.

You have plenty of info in the first post and below is an article about the walkway that you will use to disembark.

http://www.stockholmshamnar.se/*****-oss/nyheter/2016/unik-kajkonstruktion-for-kryssningsfartyg-pa-plats-i-stockholms-hamnar/

From where the walkway makes landfall, there will be a bus shuttle which will take you to the railway station, it charges a small fee but the ticket is valid all day.

You could, for example, go to the Central station, leave your luggage there and then just walk to Stadshuset, have a look at the beautiful views and walk back in an hour or so. Or walk/take the metro to the Old Town (Gamla Stan) and walk around for a couple of hours. Gamla Stan would also be a good place to shop for souvenirs.

From the Central station Arlanda Express is the fastest (20 min) but most expensive way to travel to Arlanda.

Hi Desdichado,

How far is Gamla Stan to the Port. Our ship leaves at 16:00 (4:00 PM).

We plan to leave Gamlan Stan at 3:00. Is it too far to walk?

It depends on which ship you are on and where it docks.

Frihamnen is too far to walk but Stadsgården berths (S160 and S167) or Strömmen/bouy is walkable.

Walking from southern end of Gamla Stan to Stadsgården S167 will take approximative 35 minutes according to Google Maps+extra time for stops to enjoy the view/taking photos.

S167: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/59.3226926,18.0731873/59.3193431,18.072817/59.3175349,18.0829036/59.3171625,18.0894468/59.315598,18.0954528/59.3144759,18.0988747/59.3160205,18.1034782/@59.3161794,18.0950177,618m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!4m1!3e2

I don't know if your ship have a requirement to be on-board at a certain amount of time before the ship's scheduled estimated time of departure.

So you need to check that with your cruise line.

If your ships is moored at the buoy in Strömmen, the walking time from Old Town is a matter of a few minutes only.

Or go with bus #53 from Räntmästartrappen to Londonviadukten. The bus' destination will be either Henriksdalsberget or Finnberget.

My ship will be docked at Frihamnen overnight on 25 June. Due to an early flight the next morning, I'm spending the night at a hotel at Arlanda airport. My question is, will there be taxis available at the port at 8:30pm or 9:00pm or will I need to book one in advance. Also will they take credit cards or will I need cash.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

at 8-9pm I don't think there will be that many taxis waiting at the port so I would book one in advance to be sure. Taxis will accept credit card.

Thank you for the information. You have been a great help.

Would you happen to know if we clear customs when we leave the ship in Stockholm?

I don't know. Someone who have experience from cruising might be able to answer that.

Hi all,

I'll be in Stockholm at the end of this month and one of the places that I'm thinking of seeing in Gamla Stan is Marten Trotzigs Alley. I was wondering if it's easy to find or how I would get there from the Royal Palace?

Also if anyone has been to it - what did you think of it - is it really that narrow?

Thanks!!

It should be pretty easy to find, just follow Västerlånggatan from Stortorget and it will be on your left side after a few minutes.

If it is really that narrow? Yes I think you could say that:

35 in wide. Especially at the Västerlånggatan side you can easily walk by without noticing it is there. By the way "Mårten" is pronounced "more ten". :)
